this goes for just about any platform you could think of, patreon twitch whatever, please do not do give money to creators through a platform's phone app unless it is literally the absolute only way you can do so. you pay more, the person you're trying to support gets less, it sucks for everyone

It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.

Re: cyclospora, Taco Bell having ethics and going "you know what, it's always the fucking lettuce, why don't we just pull that until we know what's going on" resulting in all the outlets going "LETTUCE SOLD AT TACO BELL LINKED TO EXPLOSIVE DIARRHEA" is a fantastic way to discourage ethics in future.
The Luddites' actual argument was that automated looms meant expensive, skilled workers were being replaced with literal children, who were then getting maimed and killed, and maybe this is bad.

I often say the rise in students coming to our dept with diagnoses of various kinds of neurodivergence has been matched with a corresponding fall of students coming with generalised depression. Because, you know. They're getting a diagnosis of the actual problem rather than feeling they don't fit.

It took some time and money to extricate myself from Substack when it became clear they were going to platform and promote white nationalists, but it was worth it. I am dumbfounded that anyone would now willingly choose to start a publication there.

What you frame as deserving of grace tells me who you believe should absorb the cost.
y'know, I do hafta say that Adobe's generative AI "captions" that has been annoying the piss out of Evil Hat and now Chaosium would have been caught before release if they had anyone entering real alt text into their PDFs at all. I know this because that's when WE caught it. *Before* release.
It's tragically appropriate that we spent a whole generation telling students that the humanities were moribund, and they should all study STEM, only for the greatest innovations in STEM to prove why the humanities were so essential all along.
