People are discussing how Halloween candy is so terrible these days. A reminder that alot of the candy we eat is made with women’s prison labor. Russell Stover’s factory in Kansas busses in 150 women a day via a convict leasing program to staff their candy factory.

A Russell Stover candy factory in Kansas has begun hiring incarcerated workers through a work release program, Eoin Higgins reports in his newsletter, The Flashpoint. About 150 women are bussed in from the Topeka Correctional Facility and paid $14 an hour, but the prison keeps some of their wages for room and board, taxes, transportation, and other expenses. When all is said and done, they take home less than $6 per hour. These deductions are high, but elsewhere in the country, they're even higher: In our May series on prison

Nine months later, in New Lenox, Illinois, he defended migrants: “Every one of us, whether we were born in the United States of America or on the North Pole, we all are given that gift of being created, the image and likeness of God.”

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption.

I can’t believe that this debate somehow gotta stupider after I left it. Taking the demand to prove a negative and turning it upside and calling it an affirmative claim is not a thing. Your vague feeling that LLMs might be conscious is just a vague feeling.

“The children who are randomly selected not to receive the birth dose of the vaccine, those who “lost the lottery”, face in their earliest days the risk of contracting hepatitis B, which can cause irreversible lifelong damage.” No words. I am speechless. This violates all ethical boundaries.

Total chaos in Russian cities after Ukraine's strikes on just two Yandex data centers wipes out GPS, payment systems, taxi apps and the largest websites, across the country. Russia's centralized North Korean style internet is the country's weakness, they are fucked.

“America should not be throwing a lifeline to Putin’s war machine…Putin doesn’t want peace. Putin wants Ukraine.” — Mike Pence I briefed him as Vice President. He’s right. Lifting sanctions doesn’t buy peace. It funds the war. Slava Ukraini.
