Kind of mad to be a conscious being and having to witness the slow destruction of our own surrounding environment, knowing it’s happening, feeling it happen over the years, and just having to be like “god I hope someone does something about this at some point“

This whole incident is helpfully instructive, isn’t it. Here, we have the country’s worst politicians, including a former Prime Minister, queuing up to salute a bold iconoclast who irreverently spoke truth to power and discomfited the great and good. It makes it pretty clear, does it not.

He had a unique talent for finding the thing that was obviously true but supposedly unsayable and then saying it with such panache as to give the maximum possible offence - and to all the right people. Spectator readers absolutely loved him.

I don't have any hope for Burnham at all in terms of actual change but politics seems to be mostly 'vibes' now, and he has enough whatever that is to appeal to a much broader base than Starmer did, while Farage's vibes seem awful right now and don't seem to be getting any better

It's another tough defeat to take but you know what? I'm actually proud of the boys. They put a real shift in, regardless of the result. Best thing to do is to dust themselves off and get ready to debate whether supporting England is OK from a left wing point of view for the Euros in 2 years time

I'm yet to see a single columnist or talking head or party mouthpiece note that Labour directly told the left to fuck off and never come back. Not just Starmer either. How many political cohorts have ever been directly told "there will never be a place for you here"? Not many.

I’d ask: what have they done to deserve a fair hearing, rather than dismissal? Not much yet. They might do better, but people are correct to be hostile towards politicians who spent years actively insulting and defaming them, while laughing with journos about how awesome it is to fuck then over.

You can see it in the polling. While Green/left defectors are more willing than Reform to come back... they're increasingly hardened against us. Willingness of different May 2026 defector groups to return to Labour at next election "On a scale of 1-10, how willing are you to vote for these parties at the next UK-wide general election?" - a voter was coded as willing to vote Labour if they scored at 6 or above out of 10. % still open to returning to Labour at next general election % not open to returning to Labour at next general election
