It's wild to me how many people do not understand this. "Luxury housing" is not some ontologically separate category from the rest of the housing market. Nor is "affordable housing." It's all one big fluid market & when you build more, everyone moves up & frees up the bottom end.

The idea that the wealthy, the middle class, and the poor are all in completely separate housing markets with no overlap ignores how things work in the real world. In the absence of new high end housing, wealthy people outbid the middle class for the best available existing housing and renovate it.

I sort of suspect the actual preference is "I want to not think about this" and while universal/single-payer would be bad for that in the short term it would be extremely positive for it in the long term

similar to Zohran doing small govt from the left with slashing red tape, I think he’d be a good messenger for the capitalist case for social democracy: yeah you the low six fig middle class household might lose some perks, but imagine if you could start a business without worrying about your meds

Yeah in general I think ‘reduced risk’ is the way to sell social democracy, which is similar to, but not identical to removing outright material deprivation. This isn’t the 1930s and most people (almost all of the electorate) have *some* form of healthcare, etc. What many don’t have is stability.

Hot take: it doesn't matter whether Mitch McConnell is alive or not (I assume that he is alive). If Republicans want to be down a senator from now until January, let them. I do not understand people who want Beshear to take some sort of action here.

I wish I could do more to comfort and buoy trans people who are struggling with thoughts of ending it. For myself, I lived with those thoughts daily during my teens and 20s. I couldn't imagine genuinely wanting to live during that time. I got better, and I'm still not sure how.
