Unfrozen caveman political economist. In my day, we didn't have fancy tools like causal identification, but we knew how to ask: “cui bono?" Former political scientist. Now I do research for an internet thing. The good one, though. 🇹🇼-🇺🇸 Washington, DC

The posture of Knowingness which is quick to assert that actually there is no sense things are getting worse when the state livestreams an execution because it's analogous to cop killings of the past is very stupid. You can and should notice changes.

I don't want to dunk-quote on this person, but actually, this is a perfect illustration of the problem. we can't become accustomed to or expect or concede constant monitoring from armed troops as we go about our business. it should always make us recoil. there's danger in it becoming unremarkable.

screenshot of a post that reads "Not to be all "you're getting sold" National Guard troops spend all day standing in out of the way corners of DC. Not great that they're standing in front of a ballot drop box, but c'mon, people, use some common sense. They're not stopping anyone from dropping something off." it is a quote-post of a post from the DC Council that says "this is clearly not acceptable" and features a photo of national guard members standing around a ballot box in Foggy Bottom

Getting increasingly annoyed at how so many leftists collapse all historical context and even time itself. The US hasn't done a public execution in 90 years, so this can't just be "what America is" if no living person has witnessed a public execution.

Speaking only in my personal capacity as a Taiwanese-American, I would really like to have a norm against conflating problematic (maybe even genocidal!) ethnostates with the large multinational diasporas vaguely associated with them.

NYT ME Carolyn Ryan scolds Mamdani for what I think was a very intentional and wise decision NOT to conflate antisemitism and criticism of Israel. I guess her repoters have their marching orders now. www.linkedin.com/pulse/new-yo...

I was struck that Mamdani just released his plan to combat anti-Semitism, and he sidestepped the question of Israel, seeing it as separate from anti-Semitism. For us, these issues intersect and overlap.
