this is inside baseball and not really actionable information but if you're attending otakon this year you may be interested to know that one of the arcade game vendors is a former rhythm game community guy who has been exiled for multiple credible sexual assaults and banned from two conventions

At some point there's gotta be a re-evaluation on how fan translators opt to not work on something that's "already translated" as these quick and shitty AI jobs keep happening. Otherwise we'll end up with a sea of broken works nobody will touch because ShittyLingo69 "already translated" them.

There's a trend building for 'functional completion' releases as they're now being termed to just be thrown out there as a rough draft with the usual calls for human translators to refine it. But those functional completionists still want their names on the games - a race for first. (2/3

Thank god for ai. otherwise we'd be waiting who knows how many years for human slop translations that would need to be updated due to bugs/errors and 1.1 updates etc
Also love the fact he released the tools. something we rarely get with human translations because everything is kept private. so someone else can probably translate this to thier language if they know how to use said tools

"ai vibe coded silent hill 1 pc port updates to remove tank controls and adds modern third person style controls" swear to god nobody hates old games more than the people working on this kind of junk lol

its always a bit funny to me whenever some anime streaming service removes a show and people freak out, i dont know if theres anything thats easier to just pirate

unsolicited hot take, piracy versus preservation edition: access and preservation are the same thing. if you cannot access something without restrictions, it has not been preserved. all it takes is for someone to restrict that access. then what? was it really "preserved"?

As the director of a historical video game preservation institution, and someone who has dedicated his entire adult life to this cause, this is accurate. We have attempted to work with the industry's trade organization to find a legal path forward, but they refuse to offer a meaningful alternative.

piracy is the only extant form of media preservation that exists in games right now, you might find it morally reprehensible but there is literally no other institution that will keep games alive in 25, 50 years' time

giving my ID to sony for age verification purposes (my personal info is getting leaked 4 months from now) to access the playstation store on my $1600 PS6 (launch model) so i can buy The Last of Us™ Part I Remastered for a clean $100, the future is truly here

I barely accept Steam as a necessary evil and Steam does everything possible to make digital distribution work. I am definitely not taking digital only from a company that has in the past seven days proven again that they cannot be trusted with such a system.

To this point, I will also reiterate that PS3 and PS Vita digital download preservation remains incomplete, particularly for Japanese games and DLC, where I imagine the bulk of that work has taken place abroad. This essentially gives a one-year deadline to plug some sizeable, yet quite tricky holes.
