When people were panic-buying TP & hoarding sanitizer in the early days of covid, it became pretty obvious pretty quickly that it was only happening at the stores in upper/middle-class neighborhoods. The stores in poor/sketchy neighborhoods where I did my shopping after my retail job were just fine!

Even the stuff that sounds good or looks good for a given value of ‘good’ (i.e. it convincingly looks at a glance like it wasn’t generated with a machine, it’s ‘professional’) is only capable of spitting out inputs that existed before. You can feel it in the ‘choices’ it makes, because it doesn’t make choices; it chooses a value with a weight given by a model patched from every work at once on fast forward. The nutritional value of AI work is approximately identical to watching a 2000s horror movie trailer compilation at 4X speed while second-screening Maury transcriptions.
