Incredible to see the "experts" on resolving the housing emergency that Spain is experiencing! On every television! @telediario_tve @ANoticias
@tele5_noticias @noticias_cuatro The reality is that we have politicians who try to create decrees and solutions when they lack the preparation or knowledge to devise a real solution to the problem we're facing.
Spain doesn't have a problem of a lack of decrees. It has a problem of a lack of housing.
And as long as the Government keeps confusing announcing measures with solving problems, we'll keep paying the consequences of its inaction.
Subsidizing demand without increasing supply pressures prices. Regulating a market more and more without building new housing doesn't eliminate scarcity: it manages it. Taxing a type of rental can change incentives, but it doesn't lay a single brick either.Because housing doesn't get cheaper by distributing scarcity. It gets cheaper by ending it.
Spain needs to build. A lot.
More available land. Permits in months, not years. More density wherever possible. Legal certainty. Much more public housing and also private housing.
But the Government isn't doing what's necessary. It prefers to intervene on the few homes that exist rather than create the conditions for there to be many more. It prefers to present patches as solutions and load the cost of its failure onto owners, developers, and citizens.
The rest can serve to redistribute, protect certain groups, or change incentives. But let's not confuse that with solving the underlying problem.
You don't fix a lack of housing by better distributing the few homes that exist. You fix it by making many more exist.
Less propaganda. Less patches. Less obsession with intervening on the same apartment.
More supply. More construction. More homes.

I’ve written this up here. In addition to there not being a Covid-scale drop in tourism recently, you might also be wondering why visits from Mexico seem to double around 2004-05. The answer is not a sudden shift in Mexican preferences but rather our old friend, There Was A Change In The Measure.

Trump Tourism Effects

In the past day or two on social media I kept seeing this graph from a Semafor story on the declining volume of international visitors to the United States. Semafor Graph. It seems to show, and was be...

15/ ProPublica is revealing the existence of the case for the first time. We reviewed a trove of evidence gathered by the FBI and thousands of pages of legal records, and have independently corroborated much of Kao’s account. This is the first piece of an ongoing series:

The FBI Anti-Corruption Squad Was Circling Susan Collins — Until Trump Got in the Way

After the FBI caught a defense contractor’s CEO making illegal campaign contributions, it sought to launch a sweeping political bribery probe involving Collins and others. Then the second Trump admini...

Credit belongs to ex-Mayor Valérie Plante, whose two terms from 2017 to 2025 made the city a leader in public space reclaimation, with pedestrian streets the most visible expression of this legacy. What might elsewhere have remained a temporary measure became a permanent fixture of Montréal summers.

People of all ages and abilities walk, sit, and dine along a pedestrianised street in Montreal. It is lined with trees, planter boxes, terraces, and benches.

The fundraising texts you delete are working on someone. It’s infuriating and heartbreaking. An 85yo in Ohio gave more than double the value of his home. A 91yo in an Indianapolis senior facility gave 25K times. The DCCC/DSCC don’t just tolerate the spammers who exploit seniors. They take part.

Hook and Squeeze

How Democratic consultants, committees, and party leaders built a fundraising spam pipeline that funnels money from a captive pool of elderly donors into their own operations.

The basic point is this: the audience has agency. It is not the passive object of the media's shaping and manipulations. Many of the things you hate about legacy media is just as likely the result of the audience exercising their agency over those institutions as the other way around.

The Audience Gets a Vote

In 2004, sitting in the only journalism class I would take, we watched some industry commentary on the coverage of the Michael Jackson trial and what it implied about the state of the media. One media...
