1. Shelters generally give you a bunk in a huge room full of people. A tent in an encampment gives you at least SOME privacy, some space that's yours. 2. Most shelters kick you out every morning, and have a curfew at night. 3. Shelters don't allow pets.
I was into my thirties before I realized most of this. It should be commonsense, but it isn't. Maybe take a moment to read Naomi's thread?
