I should also add that when the movie got to showing people burning Teslas and vandalizing dealerships, the theater of mostly older folks in Santa Monica started applauding. I think it is possible Trump and Musk turned libs over 50 into John Brown.

if you're looking for the cause of declining good union manufacturing jobs over the last 50 years, domestic competition from right-to-work sunbelt states is a much bigger deal than foreign competition from free trade.
THREAD: A timeline for you of facts. I'm just sharing facts, so no need to get yelly or upset. 1. DoJ opened two investigations into Trump and the coup in January 2021 within two weeks of the attack on the Capitol 1/
I think it's good that Mamdani is Just Doing Stuff but more people gotta realize that it is not a matter of Will or motivation or whatever but because the NYC Mayor, as an office, is one of the uniquely powerful individual offices you can hold in the United States (seriously)

The other day I noted the only way Trump would keep paying Event Strategies to put together humiliating public events is if it were a vehicle for corruption. Today, Natural Resource Dems released a report substantiating that corruption. emptywheel.net/2026/06/29/t...

SoftBank’s investor presentation is one of the greatest things ever made. I’ve been thinking about it all day. These are the real slides shown in a speech where Masayoshi Son said he wouldn’t retire for at least another decade. The goose stuff is truly demented. Bravo group.softbank/media/Projec...

english isn't for cowards. if you're not saying 'torpify,' that's a skill issue. there's no Académie Française telling you what to do. if you try to type 'pallific' and freak out when you see a little red underline, maybe you're not ready to roll with the big dogs.

1. I'd reply directly, but you disabled replies, @ryanlcooper.com I'll add, short of summary execution, everything else durable/structural unavoidably required some combination of a: -willing electorate; -willing Congress elected by voters;
I don't think there was much that could've survived one-term Biden being succeeded by a GOP trifecta, which really means the failure was the electorate's. I think Biden wanted to be a modern FDR, but voters didn't deliver supermajorities to make it possible, nor for durable reforms to be enacted.
i don't understand how Old Spice's marketing team landed on this ad for their Super Mario Galaxy Movie tie-in where an astronaut smells a stick of deodorant, thinks about Mario, and then kills himself. i don't understand how that's not a joke, it's exactly what happens in the ad
I'd go further. This SCOTUS isn't democratically legitimate, but there are other sources of legitimacy: legal/rational legitimacy is also available to courts that abide by the rule of law. But the Roberts Court doesn't even have that. It is *categorically illegitimate.*
5 out of the 6 Supreme Court Justices who gutted the Voting Rights Act were nominated by a president who came into office having lost the popular vote. 70% of Americans support the John Lewis VRA. The Supreme Court is historically unpopular. It is not a democratically legitimate institution.
FDR’s Fireside chat on March 9, 1937 explaining his proposal to expand the Supreme Court stands up surprisingly well. “We have reached the point as a nation where we must take action to save the Constitution from the Court and the Court from itself.”/1
The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant.”

If leaders abuse the rule of law to make themselves immune to it, so that they can undermine the rights of others with impunity, by what moral or philosophical argument are they entitled to its protections, once they lose power? By what grace should they be sorted by law instead of by other means?

Contrary to public perception a huge % of pregnant teenagers in the 1990s were impregnated by adult men. The younger they were, the larger the average age gap between mother and father was. Fixing teen pregnancy was in part a clampdown on statutory rape. That's what conservatives want to reverse.
Fox News doc on lower fertility rate: "The problem is teens and young adults, from ages 15-19 the fertility rate is down 7%, and it's down 70% over the last two decades, meaning we're telling people that are young not have babies, to wait until they're in a more stable life situation"
In an active lawsuit against the FDA, the state of Missouri is arguing that access to the abortion drug mifepristone has reduced teen birth rates, thereby harming its political representation in Congress. It’s an argument being made in federal court not just on Fox
