Wholly Diver

Boston lover, maker of charts & graphs, pedaling enthusiast. I'm all set, pal!

In 2025 we ("we" is mostly Europe) know how to build streetcars. Give them level boarding, smooth rails, modern cars and signal priority, and they have advantages over buses (electric, smooth, fast, narrow profile). But we don't do any of this in North America!

In West Rox, we've been trying to figure out what "block the bike lane" means when parking over the line into the buffer. A working rule that makes sense is whether both tires are on or outside the "outer" line of the buffer. In this photo, the rear car is OK, the front car should get a ticket.

Two cars are parked on Centre Street in West Roxbury MA. There is a parking-protected bike lane on the street, and the cars are parked in the designated spots. One of the cars (the one furthest away) has its tires completely in the buffer area of the bike lane.

Basically BlueSky has run into the facts that a) people are not very good at expected value calculations, and b) the expected utility of a bet isn't the same as the expected monetary value, and c) people may not be risk neutral anyway, and for some reason these three facts are making people angry.

Something I think about a lot is how the US created a system that produces safe, clean, virtually limitless drinking water for every citizen -- a political & engineering miracle for the ages! -- & then went ahead & created a huge, polluting, pointless bottled water industry anyway.

I can fault Mayor Wu for many things. Courage isn’t one of them. Her showing up took guts, and she said the right things. Let’s hold her, and all our officials, to what is said in times like these when the right path is obvious. 12/?

Real idea: As part of the effort to get DC and PR statehood, next Dem president should invent about State Weeks. Each of the 52 states gets its own celebration week every year. A random July week is Montana week. Tourism bonanzas. Televised lottery every year for week placement. We ain't above this.

Reminder that any remotely rational "MAHA" would focus on cars. Cars sicken & kill Americans far far more than f'ing "processed foods" or whatever.

i have been obsessed with this for years. allowing manufacturers to sell direct to consumers would be good for consumers and also destroying the car dealership would be an existential crisis for republicans

I feel it’s sort of underrated the extent to which a Dem Congress and/or states could (1) absolutely destroy car dealerships as a business, and (2) this would cripple a lot of GOP state and local parties
