Incredible. When E—n M—k & his crew obliterated USAID in a weekend, they deleted a vast trove of publicly-funded knowledge: the Development Experience Clearinghouse. A Canadian high school student (!) happened to have downloaded the entire thing for a project. AidData has now posted it for all.

One of the most exhausting things about the period when folks were arguing over whether or not ebooks were going to be a thing was every single journalist asking us, "so are ebooks so popular because you can read romance & no one even knows you're reading shameful trash?" And so... I have baggage.
I'd also like to point out that one of the main reasons I HATE our new sexless cover trend is because I think it makes sense for people to be able to tell if the book they are picking up is full of sex. Not only does that make it easy for me to find, it makes it easy for folks who hate it to avoid.

Olivia Waite@oliviawaite.com · 2d agoI have big grumpy thoughts on this, combined with booksellers preferring cartoon people to photo clinches on romances in trade paperback editions.
But even our second round of covers (the classic covers everyone yells at me for replacing lol) couldn't sneak by on most social media sites because there was skin on them, and it didn't matter of it wasn't nudity. THE RULES KEEP NARROWING.
There was a period in... oh the 2015-2017 era, I think? where a bunch of romance authors started having their FB marketing accounts suspended because FB flagged all of their romance covers that had a shirtless man on them as peddling health supplements. Paid ads were the game & those covers lost.
I have had a weird niche front row seat to the purity death-spiral because of the oddest part of my job: trying to advertise books with sex on social media. I cannot express how much our current reality is warped by the shifting rules about paid advertising on facebook & words discouraged by tiktok
