I've been a supporter of commercial spaceflight since I was old enough to understand what it meant. I was pleased when governments lost the long battle to keep private companies locked inside the atmosphere. And I'm still saying that SpaceX stock needs to COMPLETELY crash for the good of humanity.

SpaceX shares are down by half from their June peak as investors worry Musk may have oversold them on its future prospects.

"Dinner in a pill" is quite possibly the stupidest of the popular fancies about the future, given that A) no sugar or protein is concentrated enough to fit into a single pill; and B) the human digestive system requires bulk, as the fiber cultists of the late '80s could tell you.

I've made the observation before that the Tory party misunderstands a lot of Thatcher's economics, but I think Kemi's defence of a neo nazi turned Twitter troll is the real nail in the coffin of "there's no such thing as society" as they internalise it to mean the opposite of what was intended.

Universities “are increasingly acting like other employers, finding “complicated and sometimes pretextual reasons” to fire employees, even those with tenure. “What we’re seeing at the New School is emblematic of the rising pressures on higher education as a labor market and as an industry”

He Had Tenure. The New School Laid Him Off Anyway.

The professor, a longtime critic of the university, was among 19 educators who lost their positions as the institution navigated financial woes.

Living on this planet, especially as a member of a privileged society, our lives are intimately bound with the lives of others, including those who live thousands of miles away. We cannot excuse ourselves from the responsibilities we owe to each other.

I fear we might see a new alignment between a radical right death cult and a rural revivalist "simplicity" drive, which views collapse and a return to "organic" communities as a solution to decadent urbanism. A century ago this convergence led to a very bad place. www.monbiot.com/2023/10/04/t...

'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

I wish there were more mainstream legal scholars pointing out that the United States does not have a unified identity record system and thus efforts by the federal government to enforce "biological sex" classification come with serious problems in the law. cf. www.metroweekly.com/2026/04/atf-...

ATF Rule Could Criminalize Transgender Gun Buyers

New ATF requirements could force transgender gun buyers to choose between outing themselves or facing criminal penalties.

A friend dug up a piece I did on my experience running NYP Ryan F. Larkin Field Hospital during the COVID crisis in NYC. In light of all of the madness this week I updated it. I was there. I saw what this disease did and the desperate fight we were in to stop it. It was much worse than you know.

Revisiting a unique moment: How hard can it be?

As it turns out running a Covid Field Hospital in New York City was actually pretty hard

The media's takeaway from an El-Sayed win is the same as it would have been from a Stevens win, and the same as it will be if El-Sayed wins the general, or if he loses it: everyone, no matter who they are, needs to take several steps to the right.

The US is governed by a racist regime. But you know that. "The State Department is making permanent a program under which citizens from 50 countries, mainly in Africa, are required to post bonds to apply for a U.S. visa, & raising the cost as well, to as much as $20,000." www.pbs.org/newshour/pol...

U.S. will make visa bond program permanent, affecting mostly African countries

A draft notice published Friday in the Federal Register says a nearly year-long review “provided sufficient data” to suggest the bond program effectively enforces compliance with visa conditions, and ...
