Talita finishes packing the cart in the puddle of light by the apartment building's front entrance, then is startled by a movement to her left. Emerging from the darkness between the two buildings are four large shadows, with 7 eerie eyes flashing the artificial light back towards her. It's Verengt and 3 other centaurs, all barely visible silhouettes. One of them points their trunk to the matriarch and whispers something, causing them to take notice of Talita. Talita looks back at them, apprehensive. Her own pupils reflect the light too, the uneven angle causing one to glow, and the other to mostly remain dark. Verengt walks toward Talita out of the darkness, their body gaining detail as they slowly become illuminated by the door lights.

Verengt approaches Talita, who is hunched fearfully over the cart. Verengt: Talita. Good evening. Talita straightens up and nervously touches her neck. Verengt's trunk points up in a loose curl. Talita: H- hi Verengt! I need to apologize for earlier, I– Verengt: No, we should apologize. I believe we misinterpreted you. Do you speak human language with your face, as well as your trunk? They gesture with an open palm over their own face.

Talita: Oh! …Yes, I do! Verengt: Showing teeth means something very different to them, doesn't it? Talita: Humans pull their lips up and bare their teeth to show they're happy or friendly. She points at her face and pulls her lips back into a quick smile that mostly shows gums. Talita: I've lived with them so long that I do it habitually. Verengt: I see. I usually look for a trunk curl... They lift their trunk upwards in a relaxed curl. Verengt: Do humans not know what this means? Talita returns the curl, with a small closed-lip smile. Talita: No, they usually don’t. Verengt looks off thoughtfully. Verengt: They always seem so unfriendly to me, with their flat nose and teeth flashing as they speak. But I suppose that's just how they're built…

Verengt: When my matriarch stopped growing their antlers, they already had a favorite in line to succeed them. It wasn’t me, of course. It was hot-headed Etwajnh, from their first litter. I was from a middle litter, disfigured, not the strongest, not the fattest… but I was probably the most ambitious. Etwajnh was never fond of me or my two littermates, and they became sharper to us after becoming matriarch. I could see we needed to leave soon of our own will, or we would be ousted in bad will. With my sireparent and birth matriarch's support, I proposed a split that would benefit all parties. Etwajnh sought a new trade agreement with the large Kivit clan, but their matriarch didn't much like Etwajnh. So I agreed to do the negotiation for them, and in exchange, me, my littermates, and my sireparent would leave with eight of the female tep. In the negotiation, I secured trade agreements for not only Etwajnh, but our new clan as well. They gifted us— the Gwailer clan— one male tep, and offered us one of their young workers as a founding male, to create a strong bond of good will between us. And that was the most nerve-wracking part! It's one thing to decide to proclaim yourself a matriarch, and quite another to be so critically examined by a row of beauties. In the end, it was decided Pay would go with me, and the other two males went with Etwajnh.

Rose.systems asked: Pay, Yaunda, Jachipt : how'd you end up in Verengt's entourage?

Pay: <I was their founding male, our marriage was arranged by my clan and Verengt's matriarch. I was nervous at the time, but despite our early material struggles I've been much luckier with Verengt than my siblings who ended up with Etwajnh.>

Yaunda: <I was the second... I was in a bachelor clan at the time. I had left my birth clan as they had too many children to feed, and poor marriage prospects with other clans. We had been making a living dancing for settled clans and nomadic camps, but I had always wanted to marry out eventually. My fellow bachelors called me crazy for choosing to go with such a poor clan, but what can I say... you two swept me off my feet!>

Jachipt: <My birth clan was horrible. My matriarch fought constantly with their siblings, and one eventually ousted them and began selling off us male workers to anyone asking... mostly female bandit clans. I ran away with a nomad caravan when I came of age, and was fortunate to find permanent companionship in the Gwailer clan.>

Yaunda: <We're happy to have you, Jachipt.>

Pay: <And look at us now! Our children eat well everyday, and we live more comfortably than any of our birth clans.>

Bip: Oh, you must be one of those types who mostly know about centaurs from Wikipedia articles... No, I wasn't. I was friends with them. There was no point in codifying that with marriage because the clan only had 10 people, and I wasn't participating in sex with any of them. You know this pyramid is an extreme simplification, right? It's trying to apply to every clan structure at once by being vague. It works best to describe the large urban clans that alien embassies form next to, where strict boundaries like this are used to maintain control over a large worker group. But that worker group will still have a lot of internal stratification, and wildly different levels of authority. A retired matriarch is a "worker," but they have WAY more power than, say, unrelated workers forcibly acquired after clan warfare. They were not planning on having kids at the time, although Ngilick had dibs on that as the female group leader. Pregnancy has a lot of cultural baggage and unplanned larvae tend to fracture clans, so having clear permission guidelines reduces emotional conflict. Organic sophonts often have strange mass neuroses about sex and reproduction like that... humans get upset about infidelity or "cheating" in the same way. It's interesting, but it makes me glad I'm not one of them...$

We can see this in the ICE flight data. Domestic “round-up” flights are spiking, and some activist flight watchers report the flights are getting fuller. But deportation and removal flights remain steady. This means the concentration camps are getting packed to the brim. It’s awful to comprehend.

ICE is engaged in a very large escalation nationwide, with the agency claiming to be hitting record arrest numbers amid the return of quotas. This has gotten very little attention from the media because ICE learned lessons from the chaotic disasters of Kristi Noem’s tenure. Keep a watch.
