🚨🚨 New Intertidal Seagrass Paper Alert🚨 🚨 This time led by Simon Oiry who utilised a compination of laboratory 👨🏻🔬 and satelitte 🛰️ experiments to assess the effects of Heatwaves on the optical properties of Seagrass and developed the novel (and widely applicable) Seagrass Heat Shock Index!

After a few decades as an ecologist, with >60% (~20yrs) spent in the field undertaking terrestrial vert fauna surveys, my biggest take-aways inc: 1. You don't know everything, 2.You will forever keep learning, 3. Indigenous cultural knowledge = landscape ecology = awareness, 4 awareness = knowledge.
This is an education problem, not a tool problem; and we don't want people simply moving from thinking p-values are magic to thinking confidence intervals are.
Next: Geoff Cumming @thenewstats.bsky.social with 'Statistical significance and p values: The researcher’s heroin' * p values are highly unrealiable - don't trust them, don't use them! www.thenewstatistics.com tiny.cc/osfsigroulette #IRICSydney

probably my most deeply-held belief: it is not possible for a slide deck to be both (1) a good presentation aide; and (2) a standalone document that can be read and understood in isolation.

A brief glance at the github seems exactly the style of multivariate analysis that needs to become common place! 👏🏻 will try incorporate into my own teaching if i can, and fingers crossed for continuity!
Two weeks ago I organised the first Summer school in Model-based Multivariate analysis for community ecologists. We spent a week in Hjerkinn (NO), teaching 26 international participants about model-based multivariate analysis. Together with Jenni Niku, Pekka Korhonen, Francis Hui and Audun Rugstad.

Check out Simon Oiry’s new paper! We used a combination of satelite and drone optical data alongside high resolution LiDAR to assess the cover of an invasive macroalgae in an estuary in France. Not only that, we looked into historical imagery too www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

It just happened again, as it happens multiple times each year: Someone's student asked me to look at their model output, I asked why they chose those variables, they say "these variables might influence outcome". This is a failure of training in biology, not student's fault. Committee is no better!

Genetics from space?? #BIOSPACE25 @esa.int Genetics, of course, not possible to be sampled from Satellite observations 🛰️ but habitats can be defined and mapped
Now moving into the open ocean for modelling but considering local structure #BIOSPACE25 @esa.int work from the same lab (MARBEC @umontpellier.bsky.social) using image Convulutional neural networks to model fish 🐟 distributions
Now we move onto Habitat Suitability and Species Distribution Modelling #BIOSPACE25 @esa.int here work at MARBEC lab using Neural Network transfer learning to predict abundance of Fish Species
