One of my crankiest opinions that I nevertheless sincerely hold is that secular inflation over a long enough period of time will lead to a host of economic and social psychological pathologies due to the loss of durable absolute expectations for prices and costs.

Even if people aren't eating chart for dinner, it probably feels that way because they're paying off their dead mom's hospital bills and now Fido's puking blood and the car's making a weird noise and AI might take everyone's job and people act like we should be grateful because TVs are cheaper now.

i'm increasingly coming around to the idea that while the rate of price change matters, so much of this is just "number big and the Right price is when Number Small!!" - i.e. it's mostly an objection to the fact the nominal price is high even if the purchasing power is okay.

for reasons that only make sense if you're insane, a TPUSA kid complaining about burrito costs on xitter has the GOP's biggest divas going for each other's throats.

One of our TPUSA college students gave me his take on affordability:

“A burrito shouldn’t cost $20.”

Yeah, a lot of this is a hangover from Covid and Biden-era inflation, but the lived experience is the same: It just feels like basic things cost too much.

I can’t find the post but there’s that one post about how tech CEOs keep announcing they’ve invented a robot that can have sex with your wife so you can get back to the things you love like mowing the lawn

cool use case of chatgpt work i heard last night:
connect your family calendars and explain your kids' interests.
every morning for the drive to school, have it make a podcast that talks about one kid's soccer game that afternoon, one kid's upcoming birthday, some news, etc.

These kinds of claims are weaponized against victims of abuse all the time, including in court. And they completely ignore how many women behave when under threat. Women are socialized from birth to preserve community ties, to protect and defend the family unit. Their survival often depends on it.

Rep. Max Miller: "My former wife has claimed that during a custody exchange at my home that day, I assaulted her…If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later?"

In the US at least I think a left-winger can do it, but they need a pretty strong mandate and need to be coming into power when things are already fucked, so that it disguises the transition a bit, gives people a sense of “doing something about all the problems”

China (and before it, Japan) is similar but on an even more behemoth scale. You cannot have a world economy where everyone runs trade surpluses, and no one has discovered a method of development that *doesn't* stem from export booms.

It's really tiresome seeing endless Catholic editorials about how "young people" want "authentic" Catholicism and then just completely unconsciously conflate "authenticity" with the luxury beliefs and religious hobbies of materially comfortable right-wingers

Universal healthcare is a wildly popular centrist position. It is also a pro business position as it boosts labor market dynamism and removes what for most firms is a non core operation and cost. Asking how it will be paid for in a system as rife w/ inefficiencies as the US sort of misses the point

Instead of meeting with Epstein survivors, what did Todd Blanche do? He rushed to Ghislaine Maxwell’s prison cell, and then she got transferred to a cushier prison camp. This is not justice. It is corruption of a system meant to protect the most vulnerable.

So, uh, a candidate who suspended his campaign a month ago is winning a landslide against a Trump endorsed candidate because of anti-Muslim prejudice against a guy who is not Muslim (and I guess probably also just regular racism). How often does a candidate who suspended their campaign win?

Seems like an upset might be brewing in the GOP primary in #MI08 to take on Dem Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet. Trump endorsed Amir Hassan, but he currently trails an absolute nobody who suspended his campaign a month ago by a wide margin.

Following the initial airport shutdown, a DHL cargo plane departing the area collided in mid-air at 400 meters with a suspected second drone, sustaining front-end damage before safely diverting and landing in Hannover, prompting a joint state security and sabotage investigation. - BILD
