next semester i am teaching a course on the US since 1900, and I am devoting an entire lecture to - the US Civil War and Reconstruction. basically no US history after the war makes any sense unless you understand the Civil War

Dr. Abdul El Sayed, Melat Kiros and Darializa Avila Chevalier (the latter two are PhD candidates) examples of academics who successfully went out of the ivory tower and talked to regular people and resonated with them. but you'll never hear of this as an example of higher ed being engaged.
