New Atheism quickly went off the rails but there's a genuine grievance there in that a lot of social life in flyover USA centers around religious institutions and for the secular types this can be incredibly alienating even if they're friendly and that's before we get into how a lot of them aren't

It’s hard to explain but tv was better when you couldn’t watch the show you wanted whenever you wanted to watch it and most of the shows were worse and the TVs were worse and the entire experience was worse, that’s when it was better
They will probably never get kicked out of the “social media” label, but— video apps aren’t social, barely ever were. 90+% of those videos are made by someone the watcher doesn’t know. IG and TikTok are extra strength television— faster, worse, even more scattering, even less curation or coherency.
dkhunter@dkhunter.bsky.social · 2d agoI have thoughts on this, but perhaps I'll do a bad social media for now and let them percolate rather than responding with the snap take lol I will say it's sorta bleakly funny seeing this logic being applied to television, when that itself is now under threat by even shorter video forms.
“If this was true, I would be in jail” is not a real profession of innocence; it is a brag about how strenuously the state protects the male right of private sphere violence against women and children.

And how rarely those things happen to abusers, esp. high-status white male abusers.

The tragedy here is that the environmental movement established itself culturally and institutionally when the localized environmental impacts of economic development were becoming understood but before the widespread impacts of climate change was.

I agree government should have invested massively in nuclear subsidies, but this conversation is always distorted. Nuclear didn’t fail because of Chernobyl and certainly not because of the environmental movement. It failed because we live in a market economy and nuclear is astronomically expensive.
