Air quality. I grew up in the Los Angeles basin in the 70s and 80s and remember having to stay inside because the smog was so bad - Stage 2 smog alerts, they were called. Apparently they haven't had one of those since 1988. Haven't had a stage one smog alert since 2003.

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

in 2016 Elon Musk said he would build a fully automated factory in Fremont, California for the upcoming Model 3 and he then spent on the order of $2 billion on production lines that didn't work, forcing Tesla to assemble cars by hand in a tent but sure, now he's gonna do it on the moon

it’s crazy how so much of the right wing cultural push is just ‘let’s all pretend we never learned how bad/complex all this stuff is and go back to the way things were when we were ignorant’ ngl I get why it’s powerful messaging but it really is the death of knowledge/growth/expertise

I'm calling it: "Start smoking" is going to be mainstream MAHA / Republican health advice by 2028. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

There is no rigorous evidence that Gundry’s lectin-free diet works and may actually be harmful, according to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Gundry has also pushed questionable theories about other health topics too. In an episode on the popular Doctor Mike’s YouTube channel in defense of his diet, Gundry argued that smoking can actually make some people live longer. It finally took my pro-vaccine dad reading Gundry’s Wikipedia page—which includes Gundry’s claim in an abstract that mRNA Covid vaccines “dramatically increase” inflammation—for him to leave me alone on this topic. A Reuters report says that Gundry’s abstract, which also received an extensive correction, doesn’t contain “reliable evidence.” Conversely, research does show that Covid vaccines decrease inflammatory markers when people get a Covid infection.

Fascinating interview with Robert Kagan, where he says that the biggest mistake of the Iraq war was that it permanently crippled the American public's conceptualization of their country's role in the world, and then admits that America is exceedingly Islamophobic and this informs foreign policy.

In a wide-ranging interview with RS, the hawkish historian talks primacy, neoconservatives, and why he opposes the war in Iran

Does tenure protect some weak performers? Sure. So does capricious management, where bosses can fire people for any or no reason, and keep people on no matter how crappy they are. At least this way, there's due process protection. But that's all tenure really is. (cont)

Gill: All 100 senators last week passed a non-binding resolution condemning any pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell. They're simultaneously considering confirming the guy who met with her and moved her to a low-security facility as the top cop in the United States. That is so insane to me.

NEWS: Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC) just dropped out of his re-election race at 3:32 a.m.m. He said he’s done running but will finish out his term. This after the House Ethics Committee found “substantial reason to believe [he] violated House Rules related to sexual harassment and hostile workplaces.”

So wrong. We *need* teachers & social workers (and if these careers are underpaid, it because they tend to be dominated by women). Arts, music, and religion are three of the most fundamental ways people give meaning to their lives. Plus, in a free society, people can major in whatever they want.

President Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/aaAEu6v
