Air quality. I grew up in the Los Angeles basin in the 70s and 80s and remember having to stay inside because the smog was so bad - Stage 2 smog alerts, they were called. Apparently they haven't had one of those since 1988. Haven't had a stage one smog alert since 2003.

it’s crazy how so much of the right wing cultural push is just ‘let’s all pretend we never learned how bad/complex all this stuff is and go back to the way things were when we were ignorant’ ngl I get why it’s powerful messaging but it really is the death of knowledge/growth/expertise

Does tenure protect some weak performers? Sure. So does capricious management, where bosses can fire people for any or no reason, and keep people on no matter how crappy they are. At least this way, there's due process protection. But that's all tenure really is. (cont)

So wrong. We *need* teachers & social workers (and if these careers are underpaid, it because they tend to be dominated by women). Arts, music, and religion are three of the most fundamental ways people give meaning to their lives. Plus, in a free society, people can major in whatever they want.
