I make videogames and talk about them. Currently with Epic Games. Giant Elder Scrolls nerd. Opinions don't represent employers.

Using lists of three is not an "AI tell." It's a common trait in human writing because our brains biologically want to make sure there's always one thing to marry, one thing to fuck, and one thing to murder.

Regardless of how your feel about genAI, it does make me sad to see some folks go all the way to "unless you're doing everything from scratch by hand you're bad." Not doing laborious work is great! Getting the same result faster and with less effort is great! That doesn't *have* to mean genAI.

Using automation means you don't care is just basically the funniest shit in the whole world to me to hear a bunch of computer professionals today.

The news is always "This absolute fool was dismantled in hearings today. He is manifestly unqualified for the position and would be an existential danger if confirmed. Disaster. He is set to be confirmed immediately." When you ask why everyone is furious and exhausted all the time, this is why.

One of the things that, as lead writer, I had to bang into the head of senior leadership sometimes was that writers were not interchangeable even within a project. One writer knew a certain companion inside and out. When we lost that writer, a new writer coming in took twice as long to do the work.

Hey, so, I was so angry today that, for once, I blogged it instead of posting about it. Games media, especially mainstream games media, cannot keep abdicating responsibility in how it talks about these things an-evening-at-the-inn.ghost.io/video-game-s...

Gamedevmap is here on bluesky! I remember using it to find tons of studios I didn't know existed when I was starting my career.

Here’s a really fun one! The iconic armor worn by the Dragonborn in all the Skyrim key art was made by Lead Character Artist Christiane Meister. The Steel Sword (and a majority of weapons in Skyrim) were made by Senior/Lead Weapon Artist Dane Olds. Both were just laid off by Microsoft.

Picture of Skyrim key art. The armor is circled and labeled “Christiane Meister”
The Sword is circled and labeled “Dane Olds.” These were the devs that made the in game art and they were both just laid off.

Dane Olds is my truest friend. He is an artist of legendary skill. If you’ve played a BGS game you’ve had his art on screen 99% of the time. Too many Skyrim weapons to count. All the Dwemer creatures. MUD CRABS. Like half the guns in Fallout 4. Loads of weapons in Starfield. Laid off by Microsoft.

Okay y'all, so about that whole thing where indie games are supposed to keep the games industry alive while AAA melts.... We really need to figure some way for indie game devs to get money DURING the process and not after. I have been working three jobs (including the game) for over two years now.

Among the layoffs was character artist Christiane Meister — a 27-year veteran of Bethesda and (as far as I can tell) one of the longest tenured women in games, period. She worked on Argonians + Khajiit in TES3, horses in TES4 and TES5, Fallout creatures, and more. (cont'd)

Screenshot from the 2006 TES4: Oblivion Making Of documentary, showing Christiane sitting an an old school CRT monitor working on a horse. Her cubical is decorated with action figures and plushies, many of them of Stitch from Lilo and Stitch, but also a fishtank and a poster of TES3 Morrowind. Photo of the TES3 Morrowind developers around 2002. Christiane sits in the middle, one of the few women on the team.

Lately, there’s been a lot of worry over game discs. But did you know there’s one disc that will never let you down? That’s right: I’m talking about Aten, the disc of the sun— the only god you’ll ever need to worship.

I keep seeing people thinking this is a bluesky problem. If you're seeing this it thinks you're in a state or country with age verification laws. This is what every social media site will do if KOSA and the KIDS Act succeeds. Running to another socmed won't fix it, we have to fight the source.

Well i dont know how long this login session is gonna last but @bsky.app just asked me to do an age verification with personal information. If this happens again i will not attempt to log back in. If i dont post here again let bsky know that i prefer my privacy over this platform.

I'm looking to speak to folks who have worked as contractors via agencies or other third-parties, who have lost work recently as a part of restructurings/larger layoffs at companies like Xbox, Epic, Ubi, etc. Want to know about the larger, uncounted cost of these things. Email and Signal are in bio.

I get that their burn rate has got to be insane but that’s a team that can pull off the best gunfeel in the industry. You’re never getting that back. That intangible is worth way more than whatever it looks like on a balance sheet. Run it at a loss for 3 years and make untold bank on the next game.

Our games industry is people. Our studios are people. Our teams people, our games by people for people. Our games are made by people, in groups of people, in teams of people, making people things for people. The magic is people, and the people deserve so much better than all this. I am so sorry.
