Avid consumer of fish-related content. (Not a consumer of fish.) Social & environmental justice, gardening, cooking, and trying to make my car live forever. I respect your pronouns but consider mine irrelevant.

“It’s so hard to get kids to eat vegetables,” they say. Meanwhile, I take my 11 month old out to the garden and let him hold the produce on our way back inside… 🌱

A small eggplant with dark purple skin that looks black in the warm light, sitting on a wooden table. There are several small bite marks in the end, revealing pale green-white flesh.

'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

Fae: “Tell us your true name.” Me: “…Just my name? No birthdate, no SSN, no fingerprint scan, no address, no mother’s maiden name? Are you sure you’ve even got the right Olivia Waite? There’s like six.” Fae: “What the hell kind of bargains have you been making?” Me: “They call it health insurance.”

Right now, vague genres interspersed with whatever came out of the boxes (which were sorted by tetris principles). Nonfiction has a cookbook shelf blending into gardening blending into how-to and reference books. Those are above the uni textbooks I couldn’t bring myself to sell back. There’s… 1/📚

Enough of the horrors and doom scrolling. Let's talk about something fun. How do you arrange your books?

Little sad nobody seemed to recognize my Dresden Codak t-shirt, which I bought at the *last* regional webcomic event I attended eons ago. (RIP, New England Webcomics Weekend.) I’m kind of shocked there wasn’t a Topatoco merch table at this one.

Spent a few very enjoyable hours at Metro Detroit Webcomicon today, putting faces to work I’ve been enjoying for years and finding a few new-to-me sites I need to check out. I feel so lucky that all these artists got together in essentially my back yard for this event.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

An aircraft passenger oxygen mask: a drop down passenger mask with air bag and yellow plastic mouth and nose cover, oxygen tube has been cut; Demonstration model used by flight attendant crew for passenger instruction. Has text on the side indicating that it's non-functional.

Ok so traffic lights have faces, right? The vertical ones. Red ones look worried, yellow is disgusted/confused, green is smiling. I came to this conclusion when I was a little kid and never wondered if anyone agreed, til it came up in conversation with my husband. He thinks I’m nuts. Do you see it?

Three traffic lights hanging (unrealistically close together) from a pole. The body of each light is black, with a white border. The left one is red, middle yellow, right green. Background is a blue sky with wispy clouds and there are slight shadows suggesting nearly overhead sunshine.

Uhh. I think my kid’s first word might have just been “stinky.” I was trying so hard to steer him towards “cheese,” I don’t know how to feel about this.

The people running these companies are absolutely invested in blurring the lines between Machine Learning (largely good, useful), General AI (sci-fi, does not exist), Generative AI (mediaslop), and LLMs (wordslop) so they can promise the moon to investors and sell slop.

realized ai is like leaf blowers are there specific use cases where they’re helpful and maybe even a potentially expert tool? sure are they good for the general public to use for most of the reasons the general public uses them for? absolutely the fuck not

I was in college and OCRemix was all over my boyfriend’s music collection. I fell in love with music from games I had never heard of and was delighted to find remixes from the few games I had played too. I know there are a few djpretzel tracks in that playlist!

American lobster?! Not a chance. 🦞❌ Beer and fish have always gotten along. The trick is making sure the fish keep showing up. 🍺🐟 Choose sustainable seafood, and you’re helping keep that pairing on the menu for generations to come. 🌊 www.seafoodwatch.org

Why pair fish with wine when you can pair it with beer instead? Here’s your guide to picking your next best piscine pairing.

If you use AI for your advertisement flyers, I'm going to make assumptions about you. I'm going to assume you cut corners on everything. If you're a bakery, I'm going to assume you use poor quality ingredients. If you're a handyman, same thing, I'll assume you cut corners on your work.

If the actor with British accent is evil then you’re watching Sci fi. If the actor with a British accent is good then it’s Fantasy. If the actor with a British accent knocks something over then it’s a Rom com.

This, in the US as well. I care about the way immigrants are being mistreated and alienated, I care that the next generation might be less culturally rich, I care that the economy benefits from the world’s talents. I care a lot about immigration! But not in the way the media might imply.

It also annoys me that the assumption that everyone who cares about immigration thinks it's too high. I care because I want a multicultural society based on empathy, respect and understanding.

verifiably pre-2023 information (software, writing, imagery) is going to take on the import of low-background steel, a vital and increasingly rare resource from an era free of cataclysmic distortion
