My kid is playing to design her own smartphone on a small card box. She drew the app icons on her “screen” and showed me what she had: Whatsapp, Youtube, Google Maps, Music… she then pointed at one and said “I don’t know what this one is.” Phone calls. It was the one to make phone calls.

If I have a complaint about this article, it is that it really focuses on political, cultural repression. But the economic issues, and the difficulty envisioning a future is at least as large an issue as far as I can see.

Spot on. Though, whenever I feel insecure, so many people wanting to debate social constructs make me at least feel that my position as a sociologist is somewhat important (shh don't tell anyone that positions are also social constructs)

your apartment, the sport of basketball, and the Republic of Korea are all social constructs. mere recognition of this fact does not actually make the question of whether you are standing in your own apartment, playing basketball, or a Korean national up in the air until settled by op ed editors

My personal take as someone who grew up in France/Turkey: for me summer vacations as a kid involved treks through pine trees among the smells of sage or laurel to reach a creek to swim with a childhood friend or crush. Seeing that this flaura will not survive climate change and fires is devastating

Good thread. I remember when news outlets in the US had gone through a mea culpa "never again" period post Iraq war after they had uncritically rehashed everything the Bush administration was peddling. Sad to be reminded that they did not do much to change the mechanisms in place 20+ years on

3) Post-9/11 coverage of Iraq? 2016 coverage of Trump? Ignoring massive poverty? Sorry, but saying "Mistakes were made" years later isn't critical self-reflection. WHY were mistakes made? HOW does journalism function? What's IMPACT of poor coverage on society/politics? That's a critical examination.
