This is clearly a good result for Labour, but it also doesn't strike me as a terrible result for the Greens. Vote share held up from the local elections in a constituency that was never really a target for them

Archer’s resignation from the London mayoral race after it was revealed he lied in court was the thing that got Paul Foot up from his sickbed and contributing again, having first started chronicling Archer’s lies and misdemeanours in 1969. From the Private Eye archive. Issue 992, December 1999.

Also, once you know about Milligan and Sellars' mental health problems, The Goons never quite sounds the same. Alan Moore once suggested that postwar high-energy silliness was a kind of national nervous breakdown, that in a world where such horrors happened, the only reasonable thing was to go mad.

The Green Party deserves thanks on two fronts. Firstly, for helping to bring down Kier Starmer's government. And secondly, for reminding us how toxic and useless some parts of the British left are.

NYC Mayor Mamdani joined comedian Theo Von on his podcast and repeated his belief that the US should join the ICC in arresting Benjamin Netanyahu, after the Israeli prime minister singled out the mayor during his recent UN speech. The mayor also discussed antisemitism and affordability in New York.

The "Zionism is racism" motion, to be debated at the Green Party conference tomorrow, will not advance the Palestinian cause one inch. But, if adopted, it would marginalise and discredit the party. There are powerful ways to confront the genocide. Toxic gesture politics isn't one of them.

What a week. We've seen the news agenda rescued from the grip of the far-right. We've seen astonishing levels of competence in government communication. And we've seen the outline of a radical policy programme. It's a v.exciting time to be involved in politics iandunt.substack.com/p/some-dispa...

Some disparate thoughts on a historic speech

For the first time in two years, we freed ourselves from the far-right’s strangle-hold over the news agenda.

This is the most ghastly story- a “will they, won’t they” debate about whether Tennessee will execute a woman today - leaving her in tortured limbo. The death penalty is abhorrent and should not be allowed in a civilized society.

I’m told the state has until midnight to carry out the execution. Still unclear what happens next, but prison officials are bringing those of us witnessing the execution inside now to be ready.
