Data centers will be remembered as our generation's interstate highways. The amount of socioeconomic, spatial and environmental damage it wrecks on urban areas, particularly the most vulnerable, will take decades to undo, if there is even the tax base or political will to do so at all.

Now, this could scale to whole companies and even entire industries. Hundreds of thousands of tasks and positions that don't actually require human discernment or effort because they don't create anything meaningful or productive besides numbers on a ledger. I think Graeber had a name for this...

For example, an email that you can use AI to write instead of writing it yourself, or that can be summarized by AI instead of reading it yourself, is an email that probably didn't need to be sent.

My take on this sort of thing from a couple years ago was that, any part of a computer-toucher job that can easily be done by AI is probably something that doesn't actually have to be part of the job. There's so much pointless drudgery that we've decided to automate rather than eliminate.

I do think there’s a pretty big divide in the discourse about AI between people who have non-traditional employment and people who have white collar jobs. There’s a lot of stuff in white collar jobs that is actually drudgery and there’s real gains there that people like.

plenty of people would try their hands at interesting little businesses if it they did not need to generate a huge profit at the outset and i think this is something governments should encourage. (and lots of little businesses makes a place more livable!)

Nobody is going to want to hear this, but a real risk we face, no matter who is president next, is that they will see no need to restore the rights lost or the executive power stolen in the last 10 years.

Schumer and Jeffries HAVE said a few things: 1. No Impeachment proceedings against Trump. 2. No Medicare 4 All 3. Continued "support" for Israel Feel free to add the other things you've heard them say on TV etc... over the past 6 months. THAT is the agenda.

I’m concerned that the election is weeks out and there is no strong vision/plan for an immediate agenda to rein in the fascist authoritarianism. It needs to be articulated so that the election functions as a clear mandate for accountability. Who is getting impeached first?

The Anthropic, Meta, and Google "breaking containment" incidents all resulted from setup errors (or a stunt) by the same company: Irregular. Irregular created a sandbox that wasn't really a sandbox because it had a live internet connection, and gave instructions that were then carried out online.

a pretty good way to gauge the conversation is whether people are talking about harm or risk harm is about what's happening now already risk is about what could maybe happen in the future and basically the whole ai cult scene is in agreement that possible risks are more important than current harm
