Atlantic #HurricaneSeason begins today, June 1. Since records began, the continental U.S. has experienced four Category 5 hurricane landfalls, and ALL four of them were only tropical storms just three days prior! Rapid intensification is terrifying when it occurs right before landfall.

It does look like alerts went out (would like to hear more). A testament to the meteorologists at NWS offices working around this turmoil. Putting the country in this position is extremely dangerous. Lives are put at risk when there is not full and consistent staffing in these kinds of positions.

First, satellites do not replace radiosondes. Radiosondes are the ONLY way you can get measurements every 15’ through the atmosphere. Second, services HAVE BEEN disrupted. Missed balloon flights is a disrupted service. Offices not open 24/7 is a disrupted service.

WISN 12 News received a statement from Kim Doster, communications director from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which said:

"NOAA is deploying an all-of-the-above approach to its extensive weather data collection system, including the continued use of weather balloons alongside our robust system of cutting-edge satellite technologies to meet weather observation needs. In addition, NOAA is exploring new ways to supplement our existing data collection methods to source better and more accurate information for the American people. NOAA does not anticipate any disruptions in services as a result of staff reorganizations."

The US needs more publicly funded agriculture research & development to offset the effects of climate change. But instead the US has been investing less. Cutting agriculture R&D spending will dampen productivity at home & abroad while raising food prices. New paper by @arielob.bsky.social et al.
