In 1963 cosmonaut Valentina Ponomareva was to be the second woman in space on Vostok 6, launching the day after Valentina Tereshkova on Vostok 5. But she was a feminist who spoke her mind, a problem for her bosses. So a man replaced her on Vostok 6. She never flew in space and later retired.
