STUPID AIRLINE TICKET SHIT I HAVEN'T HAD TO THINK ABOUT IN 10 YEARS BUT DO NOW: Alaska now book all of their round-trip tickets with round-trip fares. These cost the same as booking individual one-way, but if you cancel the return leg, your ticket is rebooked as a one-way fare ON THE DAY YOU CHANGE

Reagan-era tax cuts dramatically reduced the number of tax brackets, especially at the top. Today, the 37% rate applies to everyone making above roughly $600,000. That means the tax code largely treats someone earning $1 million the same as someone earning $100 million.

I don't know what my probabilities are on literal extinction, but I think there are a number of ways AI could go poorly for humanity, and at the current frankly terrifying pace humanity will be quite lucky if we manage to find and stay on the narrow path between all the bad outcomes. I am heartened by the many costly actions OpenAI has taken recently (detailed in several recent posts), but regardless of what you think of OpenAI, this is not a problem that can be solved by any one company (or country) in isolation. We need coordination to be able to approach future capability increases with an appropriate degree of caution and humility, and we need it yesterday.

This all really frustrates me because the centrist think tanks do this thing where they go, "Ermmmmm the public actually thinks Democrats are super far left and extreme. The answer is to move to the center!" ignoring that THEY ARE THE ONES DOING THINGS TO MAKE THE PUBLIC BELIEVE DEMS ARE EXTREME.

Finally managed to clip this unsurpassable, utterly unhinged Diana Rigg monologue about Tim Curry in The Worst Witch (1986). She DID NOT need to go this hard. Not a morsel of scenery left unchewed. An absolute masterpiece. Sinking and rising in an undulating serpentine formation.
