Listening to a deep dive on Victor Marx, the Republican gubernatorial candidate in Colorado, and he's my absolute favorite, an adult who lies like a little kid; he claims his birth father was both a warlock and an associate in the "Cajun mafia."
I am filled with anger at what our government is doing. It’s just 10 arrests so far, yes; not a mass pogrom. But the fear is real and this is actual people who didn’t DO anything (except not immediately return to a country in the throes of danger).

the concern with the Arday story isn’t the fact of the media coverage, it’s the volume. it’s perfectly reasonable that there would be some coverage of the story, and basically indefensible that there was as much as there was.

And the media will get a lot of the blame. But those who perpetuated the lies and shielded Arday from facing up to them deserve more of it.

It's so blazingly obvious that this is true. A university lecturer being fired for plagiarism would not be national news >99% of the time. It was inflated into one this time purely because it fit into racist "culture war" narratives about "DEI".

It’s the official unwritten rule in the NJ Legislature that when a member leaves the chamber during a voting session, a staffer (be it the members office staff or a Majority Office staffer) votes for them. There’s no controls on who does it, or any record of when a vote is cast that way
That’s right, when the website says “X assembly member voted this way” it’s entirely possible they didn’t, and some 20 something staffer making barely above minimum wage cast it for them. And because some members are gone for extended periods, this could be the case for multiple votes.

Tangent to the tangent: the Democratic Party writ large has assumed support from people who speak a language other than English, and the Republicans have successfully invested a lot of money in making this a bad assumption by dominating non-English media.

to elaborate a bit: under various laws, certain monies are exempt from debt collection. SocSec & ERISA pensions are protected by federal law; seizing them to satisfy a consumer debt is a *very* clear-cut FDCPA violation *even if* the underlying debt is validly owed and the creditor has a judgment

when you/your parents start collecting Social Security (and pensions, if they have an ERISA pension), set up a separate bank account to receive those checks and only those checks; this also goes for if you're on disability and can manage to get a new account just for your benefits checks.
