It is truly despairing that the Democrats are so eager to start from a position of compromise and then retreat from there. This place talks about Nuremberg 2.0 and abolishing ICE (which need to happen, to be clear) but in my heart of hearts I don’t know if we’ll even get failed impeachment 2.

Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel calls on Democratic lawmakers to set aside plans to impeach President Trump if they win a majority in the House, pushing them instead to pass an ethics reform package.

In 1888, a graffito was found on a hallway wall in Pompeii. Called CIL 4.5296, this is a love poem, one of the longest and most elaborate surviving graffiti texts in the city. A poem written by a woman, and addressed to another woman ("pupula", my little doll or darling)

Graffito CIL 4.5296
Regio IX. Pompeii. interpretation of Mau, Augustus; Zangmeister, Karl Friedrich, eds. (1909)

“O utinam liceat collo complexa tenere
braciola et teneris oscula ferre label(l)is
i nunc, ventis tua gaudia, pupula, crede
crede mihi levis est natura virorum
saepe ego cu(m) media vigilare(m) perdita nocte
haec mecum medita(n)s: multos Fortuna quos supstulit alte,
hos modo proiectos subito praecipitesque premit.
sic Venus ut subito coiunxit corpora amantum
dividit lux et se...”

“Oh, if only I could hold your little arms wrapped around my neck
and press kisses to your tender little lips.
Go then, little doll, trust your happiness to the winds.
Believe me, the nature of men is fickle.
Often I would lie awake, lost in the middle of the night,
Thinking to myself: many whom Fortune has lifted up high,
those, suddenly hurled away/abandoned and falling headlong, she then oppresses.
So too, after Venus has unexpectedly joined the bodies of lovers,
daylight divides them and...”

i know a lot of people really, really want gaza to be a two-sides issue that maps cleanly onto US electoral politics, but it isn't. the mainstream of both parties supports the genocide, because the US as an institution supports the genocide. i know that's uncomfortable but you can't run away from it

i dont think people deluded themselves really…they were told by republicans that “mass deportation” was criminals and the media didnt fact check and democrats moved right on the issue there was no alternative offered to mass deportation, no one even argued against it

Correct. A LOT of people deluded themselves into thinking that Trump's mass deportation pledge was "round up the criminals and gangbangers Biden let in," which was, of course, a completely false narrative. And now people who supported it because they believed in that goal have realized what's up.

God, can you imagine living in a country like this? Captured opposition parties that don't challenge autocratic abuses and exist only to take money and direct public discourse toward acceptance all while pretending there's nothing they can do? That sounds awful. Thank god we don't have that.

NYT's article on fake political environment in Russia: That controlled exercise in political theater is occupying the waking hours of thousands of Russian bureaucrats. Campaign teams are agitating for “opposition” parties that all conveniently support the war. Regional officials are organizing the nuts and bolts of ballots and turnout. Milquetoast candidates populate the airwaves of state television.

Democrats will not get the voters they need to turn out by having anxious members of the Democratic rank and file harass anxious people to their left on Bluesky. It may feel good to argue with people online, lord knows I'm not above it, but there's no universe where it a actually matters.

saying "it's like clockwork" is a parallel to the people who think vaccines cause autism. autism symptoms start to show around the same time kids are vaccinated. complaints about candidates' shitty positions come out late in the campaign when candidates give in to pressure to triangulate.
