All the spaceships from For All Mankind and Star City in one article! That's a lot of spaceships from an alternative universe, and concept art, and cool stuff. 🖖 This is just a (very long) overview, but expect to dive deep into the creation of these designs in the coming weeks and months.

My advice as a science illustrator is that if you ever get a chance to draw the Cambrian explosion, you should go all in and spend hours researching every single one of these insane animals. 🦞🐙🦀🦑 Evolution is such a trip. I'm so grateful to have briefly existed on this gorgeous planet. 🤯 #sciart

Cambrian Explosion by Matteo Farinella

At the beginning of the month Drexel University made public that they want to close the Academy of Natural Sciences at the end of the month. The academy is the oldest natural history museum in the Americas and this would end more than 200 years of research and outreach.

“Support for bike lanes was near-universal — even people who came to ask the city to rethink a planned 79 Street bike lane in Hollyrood acknowledged their benefit and one motorist took the time to voice his support for them” edmontonjournal.com/news/local-n...

DOORWAY TO THE WEST (2006)

Another search for the light. Creating the illusion of texture in paint, the process of actually painting it, can be an act of meditation. 1/2

A solitary flame contained in a transparent sphere floats across the threshold of an uneven stone doorway set in ancient ruins. Shadow cuts across the broken remains of the facade. The sky beyond is partially cloudy, lit golden over placid water defining the horizon. In the immediate foreground, three stone steps lead up to the portal, but the ground is overgrown with wild vegetation. Flowers add an occasional splash of blue, white, and yellow at the stub of wall and on the short path to it.

I get why this seems great & on principle, I agree. I've seen the rampant phone addiction amongst kids & it's frankly jarring. And that's not even talking about the exploitation. But play that out - It would mean giving your ID to people notorious for dogshit infosec. It would be a nightmare!

“A social media ban for kids under 16 will soon become law in Canada according to a new report…The ban is part of an online harms bill being tabled in Ottawa on Wednesday. An Angus Reid study found that 75% of Canadians support a ban on social media for kids under 16.” I support it.

Please read this update regarding our policies against the use of "Generative AI" technologies in our work, including in non-journalistic tasks. TNN remains steadfastly against "generative AI" as a predatory and damaging technology backed by the worst of the gentry. Thank you for your support!

Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence
For the purposes of this policy, we define "Generative AI" as the use of any large language model, diffusion model, or other similar technology developed since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022 to generate arbitrary text or media content based on a prompt. This includes “agentic workflows,” MCPs, or any other derivative of “Generative AI” technologies used for any purpose.

Trans News Network has a strict policy against the use of any form of “Generative AI” technologies as defined above. This policy applies to all text, images, or other media that we publish on our website, social media, or physical mediums. Unlike some other newsrooms, this policy also prohibits the use of “Generative AI” in any aspects of marketing, social media, or technical features.

While our newsletter platform (Beehiiv) offers a number of “Generative AI” features, we opt-out of using any of these in the course of our work. In other words, all content attributable to Trans News Network is human-generated. In the rare case that we republish AI content as a matter of reporting on AI use by third parties, the content will be clearly labeled as generated by AI by that third party without any endorsement of said content by Trans News Network.

Please note that on some occasions, we may use machine learning algorithms that predate “Generative AI,” such as speech-to-text for assistance with transcribing interviews, OCR for extracting text from images, and other similar use cases. All output from such tools are always verified to be an accurate transcription of the original author by at least one human before publication.

watching The Price which is a fairly mid ep of TNG but it does have this amazing scene where some loser who’s fucking Troi tries to get into a dick-measuring contest with Riker, who straight up beats this dude to a pulp after trying not to play. Kirk coded behaviour I love him so much

BREAKING: Water not Coal (aka Corb Lund's petition) says it has reached the signatures required under the citizen intiative act. If signatures are counted and approved, it would theoretically lead to an 11th referendum question in Alberta this fall.

Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users. ALL ROAD USERS. What about painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them. Via @usa.streetsblog.org @nyc.streetsblog.org

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says — Streetsblog USA

Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.
