Have seen this Nature piece about the effects of X's algorithm mentioned again and it bears repeating; exposure to a right wing algorithm makes you - measurably and predictably - more right wing, even after you stop using it. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
The political effects of X’s feed algorithm - Nature
Among users initially on a chronological feed, 7 weeks of exposure to X’s algorithmic feed in 2023 shifted political attitudes and account-following behaviour in a more conservative direction compared...

OpenAI’s top scientist, in a blog post on Sunday, warns that artificial intelligence is evolving so rapidly that it is becoming increasingly difficult for humans to understand and control it. Here is the post: openai.com/index/an-ali... And a couple of small excerpts--clear warnings.
"people are anthropomorphizing LLMs because they are so astonishingly good at processing human thought and language" people will anthropomorphize a chair if you put the stitches in the right place.

I do think “every rich person went insane during covid because it was the first time they’ve been inconvenienced in decades” felt a little reductive at first but damn if isn’t more and more compelling as the years drag on

i think you can do it by making trump's crimes into true crime. no joke
I’ve become convinced by the need for large reforms but I have no idea if it’s even possible to do it given thermostatic backlash
When are establishment Democrats going to answer for their concerning and alienating ties to Neera Tanden
At a certain point you might think establishment Dems would speak out about the head of their main think tank indulging in the kind of rank bigotry that damages election prospects
Every once in a while a normal human being sneaks into a position of power, and not only is it refreshing, it is downright revolutionary.
In 2021, WHOI postdoc Laura McDonnell and her team, dubbed “The Pit Crew,” had just five minutes to attach satellite tags to the dorsal fin of each shark that they could find along the coast of Cape Cod, MA. What did they learn? Find out from @sierramagazine.bsky.social: go.whoi.edu/shark-tag
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library gifted more than 332,000,000 books since it was first created 31 years ago.
Both the Economist and others suggest this study demonstrates that AI can help students. So I contacted the lead researcher to figure out how many. Answer: Out of ~26,000 kids, a total of 20. And five months after starting to use AI, only four continued to spend 65 minutes on homework. Four.
I mean, c'mon. What this data shows is (a) there's a huge number of students using AI and not studying for very long compared to peers; and (b) negligible "benefits" for students who did study for comparable time periods and used AI.
We do not build the reservoirs needed to store the rain that falls here. We do not build strategic food reserves needed to maintain provision in hard times. We failed to build effective stores of PPE, to protect us in pandemics. This country has long been governed by people who do not prepare.
Canada’s economic future should not be shaped through an invite-only gathering of the ultra-wealthy. It should be determined democratically, with the public good and long-term sustainability taking precedence over private profit, writes Bianca Mugyenyi.

one of the many things about biden that pissed off our society's elites is that his administration had started - in a pretty small-bore and limited way - prosecuting the people who had defrauded the PPP program and that happens to include a huge % of small business tyrant types
Shouldn’t be shocked at any lie RFK Jr tells, but he whined to Dana Bash that businesses were shut down during the pandemic “with no just compensation.” There was an almost trillion dollar PPP loan program, and his organization got millions from it, none of it paid back, to make payroll.
That's what business AI-adoption has looked like to me. Management wants a magic button to increase output >2x while cutting staff by >50%. The actual (and few) AI success stories are all "expert in the field is also computer-savvy and built a custom harness for a fractional productivity increase."

Watching Star Trek TNG over again, with my 13yr old. I think this show fucked up my generation because it convinced us that villains tend to concede when Picard points out the moral consequences of their plans, and their unforeseen impact on other people’s rights and dignity.
