It's important to consider the different manuscripts we have available. Dobby is mentioned in the Rowling and Yudowsky manuscripts, but not in the Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way manuscript.
Modern scholars consider Dobby to be an Anglicization of “Dubh Sidhe”, a faerie known for stealing the socks (and feet) of mischievous children

Furthermore, the damage to subsequent layers due to the use of antiquated excavation methods involving dynamite mean that the contexts relating to the 'original Dobby' are likely irrevocably destroyed. It's a real shame in the field.
'Dobby' probably more of a composite figure in any case, all evidence suggests that the relevant texts date from several centuries later and were the product of significant rewriting and editorializing of an oral tradition to fit the revised orthodoxy of the time.
