I write and report things, and I have a newsletter that some people like. “Do you know what the sad part is…? I’m a very good tailor.” brokenbottleboy.substack.com

@paulduane.bsky.social's Barbaric Genius, a film about John Healy - the vagrant turned memoirist turned international chess whizz - is one of my favourite documentaries of all time. It's having a rare full screening at the IFI in Dublin on Monday 17th August. You should go!! ifi.ie/film/from-th...

“He was willing to say exactly the sort of thing that the powerful and privileged enjoy hearing. He maintained columns in The Sun, The Spectator, and The Sunday Times precisely because he was a voice for the party line - the party of Murdoch that never needs to seek re-election.”

NEW | A corrective to the gushing tributes… LIDDLE TO BE CELEBRATED An honest obituary for Rod Liddle, dead at 66, dead inside for many years before that. brokenbottleboy.substack.com/p/liddle-to-...

Anyone who thinks that things can only be profound if they're incredibly boring to read/ hear is a sad, sad individual. You can learn more about what class and poverty actually means from listening to "Common People" than from any newspaper long read I've ever come across.

Boots theory is an elegant metaphor by a brilliant writer. It’s not an economics paper, but — within the imagined world of Ankh Morpork — it evokes a truth: being forced to buy cheap goods is more expensive in the long run. Hooting that it doesn’t apply to *boots* in our reality is crushingly dim.

Yeah, for days people have been citing “boots theory” at me and I want to shout DO YOU REALIZE THIS IS A RANDOM IDEA TOSSED OUT BY A FANTASY WRITER AND MAY NOT ACCURATELY DESCRIBE REALITY

A forensic dismantling of Rod Liddle's bigotry, and the right wing media that sheltered behind it. "He says what we're all thinking" No. He says what you're thinking, but know better than to say out loud. That's not courage. That's a licence. And this piece revokes it. bsky.app/profile/brok...
