We already had laws that protected them from arbitrary firing. Trump broke the line item of congressional statute when he fired Rebecca Slaughter and every Inspector General in the government. The Supreme Court, rogue fascist wizard council that it is simply decided that those laws did not exist.

The idea that deep institutional damage can be easily rolled back seems like a very odd take for a conservative. The damage to the civil service system is huge, and legislation is needed to reassure future hires they won’t be fired on a whim.

Douthat is not a conservative; he’s a Republican cheerleader who feigns writing from a disengaged point of view. Burke and Oakeshott, or Hayek, would not recognize any of MAGA’s pillars as conservative. Nash himself referred to Trump as an “aberration” from the tradition.

I was going to say: is administration did a full on campaign to try to argue that they can shoot protesters in the streets, and try desperately to outright and habeas corpus, the administration failed to consolidate, but not for lack of trying.

For that matter the one reason that the “authoritarian consolidation” has not been totally realized yet is not down to some thoughtful temperance and restraint like a normal administration exercises, as Douthat demands you believe, but because they outright lost the fight in Minneapolis this winter

I would say that domestically trump has not consolidated authoritarianism to the extent his worst critics feared, but in foreign policy his record has been exponentially worse than anyone was talking about, short of actual nuclear war. (still a possibility!)
