It's fascinating (and infuriating) to live in an age where almost everyone I know is languishing in Dickensian poverty but social media is slap full of professional computer-touchers who've never known hunger insisting that the economy is fine because their metrics say rich people are rich.
It’s not modeled after the brain. This is a fiction. What happened is that some scientists use computation models FOR the brain. Now they can say ‘look it’s thinking.’ But this is a model so that is a confusion. A ‘pump’ is used as a model for the heart. But a pump is not modeled ON the heart.
Finally, a clear repudiation of the brain-dead “it’s just a tool” argument that gets floated cynically about every new technology:
Actually, fun fact, if you try and fight any battle, you will lose. That's why it's important to kick your own ass before your opponent gets there so that when he inevitably kicks your ass... Wait, wait, I had something for this. Ok... 1. My ass gets kicked 2. He shows up, kicks my ass... hm...
wild how many people seem to view parenting as a primarily adversarial relationship with their kid.
Also please ignore when I said that once someone has a billion dollars they should no longer count as a human but a dragon, and if someone slays them it's not a crime but a reason to have a big feast, the hand of a beautiful maiden in marriage, and for songs to be written about their heroic act.
Are autistic people ‘just making it up’? In a recent podcast conversation, I was asked a question that carried a striking implication: What if increasing numbers of people identifying as autistic are just not coping? 🧵 1/11 #Autism #Neurodivergent #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD
Armageddon is terrible, but our only other option was diversity trainings at work.
The millennial drive to post song lyrics without any commentary.
Dear leader of the US, no, you can't just pull out of NATO by deciding it yourself, as you are not actually the ruling King of the US. And, no, Europe doesn't have to do whatever you say and follow you into any horrifying situation, no matter what the damage to us. That's not what Article 5 means.
I miss when you'd open the internet on April 1st and find April Fools jokes everywhere. Now it feels like barely anyone bothers.

Sisyphus but every day he unsubscribes from marketing and promotion emails.
Kids these days are so lazy. They just do everything with apps. Order food with apps. Socialize with apps. Find girlfriend with apps. Back in my day you had to boot up your whole computer and log into a website to do that stuff.
Sometimes I feel so alone I open my LinkedIn account to see if a bot sent me a message.
A good game review can't come out until months AFTER launch. How can I take seriously a review of someone who is in a rush? What if the game has an issue you can discover only when you are 30+ hours in?
Seriously, stop giving a shit about what a movie gets on Rotten Tomatoes or what a game gets on MetaCritic and stop letting them have so much sway over you. You don't need the approval of rando critics and terminally online losers to like something.
Good article, but I think we're missing a piece. Part of the issue for me it's the absence of alternatives. When a child needs a device to stay in touch with a friend, removing the device creates isolation. We can't just set time limits for screentime without designing offline social opportunities.
More screen time may increase the risk of social and emotional problems in children, and kids in distress might turn to screens as a way to cope, a new meta-analysis suggests. #psychology #parenting #devpsyc #psychscisky
