This was predictable. And it was by design. Republicans ensured that many states will effectively cut benefits with burdens--and the states will take the political fall for it. I wrote this a year ago. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-big-be...

It's ALMOST like if people read @pamherd.bsky.social & @donmoyn.bsky.social's Administrative Burden: Policymaking by Other Means, they could have predicted precisely the adverse effect of layering on new administrative burdens to accessing life-saving food assistance. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/20/u...

The EPA said if power plants used only for data centers are not be subject to the federal Clean Air Act's Acid Rain Program, which has been key to the dramatic reduction of smog and soot pollution from industrial facilities. Per @reuters.com

EPA says power for data centers can sidestep pollution laws

Power sources providing electricity only to data centers and not the public grid may not be subject to federal pollution laws, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on ‌Monday.

In 2021, I coauthored a piece for @bmj.com on how the Great Barrington Declaration were using tactics pioneered by Big Tobacco/Big Oil/climate denialists Gosh, who could have predicted that the GBD would campaign for RFK Jr & MAHA & then lead Trump’s health agencies & dismantle public health? 🧐

Terrific thread I wish the author of The Atlantic piece had drawn on the decades & decades of scholarship on, & experience battling against, anti-vaxxers, the tobacco industry, improper marketing by drug companies, & health misinformation & disinformation MAHA are the new Merchants of Doubt 😢

Facing federal science budget cuts, biologist Daniel Blumstein resorted to uploading marmot videos to OnlyFans to raise funds for his marmot research. However, when he uploaded his driver’s license for verification, OnlyFans informed him that his appearance didn’t match the marmots in the videos.

The extraordinary wildfire outbreak across Oregon, eastern Washington, and southern British Columbia has become even more alarming amid critical fire weather conditions. Over 500,000 acres have already burned in OR & WA alone, and that number could be >1 million acres by Mon.

An alarming snapshot from NOAA Wildland Fire Portal depicting numerous large smoke plumes and large heat signatures from many wildfires burning across Oregon, Washington, and British Colubmia.

I look forward to all the reports & coverage about all of the internal problems & mistakes of all of these other institutions, in the same way that universities are constantly blamed (& blaming themselves) for “declining trust.” “Compared to what?” news.gallup.com/poll/712436/...

“Compared to what?” is always the essential question when asking about critiques of higher education & universities, whether we’re discussing declining trust, freedom of speech, viewpoint diversity, or any of the other things.

Pediatricians have long understood that one infection can create the conditions for a second organism to exploit localized or systemic injury. Quantifying this interaction- particularly from the standpoint of protective benefit on an off target organism for an immunization / immunoglobulin is 👏👏👏👏

One immunization may protect newborns against 2 serious diseases Newborns immunized against RSV also had a 36% lower risk of infection with a life-threatening illness called invasive pneumococcal disease. Read more: https://bit.ly/4yTZY1s

My explanation of how climate change is amplifying these wildfires ended up entirely on the @npr.org cutting room floor. Instead they included an extremely misleading of the supposed role of fire suppression and human alteration (expertly debunked here: www.theclimatebrink.com/p/canadas-bo... )

I’m will be on @npr.org All Things Considered this afternoon talking a about the new @nationalacademies.org climate change/extreme weather report and the current wildfires and apocalyptic haze

A concerning development surrounding an incredibly obscure process Congress set up to deport some people with connections to terrorism. It comes as the Trump admin has reclassified many gangs as “terrorists,” and accused some innocent people of being gang members.

NEWS: The Trump administration has activated a secretive and never-before-used legal process to quickly deport foreign nationals deemed to be “alien terrorists” or their immediate family members. w/ @joshgerstein.bsky.social www.politico.com/news/2026/07...

Thousands of people detained by ICE are actually held in local, publicly operated jails. These facilities–run by elected sheriffs–are making money off of the federal government's deportation agenda.

U.S. map showing that in 25 states and D.C., federal agencies like ICE and the U.S. Marshals only detain people using local jails. In other states, jails play a part in the detention network alongside federal or private facilities. In Arizona, Delaware, and Hawaii no local jails provide substantial detention space to these agencies.

They kept distributing it until Thursday. So we've still 2 weeks of poss. new cases. Appreciate @melodyschreiber.com focusing on the bigger picture--been a bit frustrating to see some of the framing around the FoodNet cuts. Anyway, my earlier piece on the gargantuan state-level investigative work amid the cyclospora outbreak-- work that relies on federal support:

The detail I can’t get out of my head here is how he told his ex-wife that he had been hired by ICE, but she thought he must have been having a delusion, because how could ICE hire someone who had such a long history of family violence?
