Tried playing the Motorslice demo on my Steam Deck. Deck was at 30% battery, but the second I booted up the game — zoop! — it immediately burned through the rest of it.

The way profit maxxing corpo culture has invaded every form of art through algorithms pushing people into daily posting is really weighing on me lately. Efficiency and regularity of making "content" being prized above all else feels so grim, man.

And it's gonna be because the institutional memory got obliterated in layoffs, senior skills demolished, team synergy/morale wrecked while Money Guys were pivoting + derailing entire studios to squeeze more $$$ It's gonna be cause of the human cost. Don't blame the wounded when you start to feel it

It'll be in ways you don't always understand but definitely notice. Friction in places there didn't used to be Why isn't this fun anymore? Why does this take so long to load? Are they EVER gonna fix this bug? The last franchise game had this figured out, why'd they fuck up that feature in this one?

Deleted Bluesky off my phone and YouTube off my home screen to try to wrench back control from these dopamine addiction apps. It's only been a day or two, but I already feel much better.

I worked at Disney a while ago. Do you know why theme parks are so safe? Because OOSHA reps can walk the track on any ride at any time and any safety violation they see is a $10,000 fine. Each. Theme parks are not safe because the company cares. They're safe because it's cheaper to comply.

Turns out that food companies were only checking their food because the government told them to, which is exactly why we need government regulations.

Interesting that almost all analysis of Xbox in freefall completely ignores an organized boycott intended to harm the company financially. Meanwhile, multiple news stories on the home page all month about PlayStation boycotts that haven't even happened yet.

Game Pass was supposed to be the all-you-can-play subscription service that put Xbox on top after a disastrous generation. Instead, it's a failure that's threatening to ruin the company. https://bit.ly/4pIIUau

In Rilke's letters to a young poet he talks about how artists need to work through creative thoughts internally and have patience with that. "In this there is no measuring with time, a year doesn’t matter, and ten years are nothing." I feel vindicated by a dead old poet, at least.

I think coxed pairs might be the least efficient crew boat imaginable. Bigger boats definitely need a coxswain, but the guy in the bow of a pair could easily call commands like they do in doubles or quads. And as long as you're adding equal pressure on both sides, you're golden.

A picture of a "coxed pair" - two rowers with sweep oars and a coxswain.

In the 1900 Paris Olympics, the Dutch rowing duo lost their heat because their cox was a lot heavier than the children the French used, but as the fastest losers, they got to the final anyway, replaced their cox with a random kid, and won by a fifth of a second
