People keep thinking they can automate the type of admin work often done by women... bc they think their institution is a machine and not a brain. They think it can be recreated as a set of tasks executed w/ rules, and that we can skip the parts relying on relationships, memory, and judgment.

“Universities must stop falling in love with every new piece of software … that the tech industry pitches as essential. Administrators spend on software as if it is a durable investment, when all of the evidence shows that it … makes bloat worse.” globecollegetown.substack.com/p/higher-ed-...

College campuses need to be liberated from their administrators

Higher ed is being strangled by absurd and costly rules. What message is that sending to students?

This 💯. Planning lessons, designing assessments, grading, adjusting future lessons, bringing in new insights from things you've read. All of this is part of teaching and it all requires a deep well of expertise and we should both be rewarding teachers for that and funding the acquisition of it.

Take teachers seriously as people who have a deep understanding of what they teach. If they don’t, put a shitload of money into ensuring that they do. Stop telling teachers they “teach kids, not content.” Don’t suggest that AI can handle the planning while we do “the teaching”. Etc.

Discord PSA: starting mid-December, messages you post in public channels of Discoverable servers can show up on the web and in Google. On by default in the US. DMs and private servers aren't included. Turn it off now. It only covers messages sent after you flip it. User Settings > Data & Privacy

Screenshot of my Discord settings page titled "How Discord Uses My Data." Every toggle is switched off, including "Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages," which notes that Discoverable messages appear as written but without your username.

The State Board of Elections’ last-minute changes to voting by mail are leading to thousands more absentee ballots being rejected this election - at a rejection rate twice as high as in 2022. It’s infuriating. North Carolinians, please make a plan to vote this year, in person if possible.

In my most curmudgeonly moments, I don’t see why presenting the prose output of a machine built on mass theft as your own scholarly work should be evaluated less harshly than old school plagiarism. Traditional plagiarists at least had to identify and evaluate the works they were going to copy.

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg
