Going through the A-Z database list that was run by the previous librarians at my school from about 2008-2015ish. It's depressing how many websites and webpages no longer exist. Even the ones hosted by universities.

I wrote about a reason not to use generative AI in your writing that I haven't seen anyone talking about. Once I realized this, banning GenAI in our lab's writing became a no-brainer. Feel free to share, I think this is probably useful especially for trainees: www.carlsonlab.bio/thoughts/the...
The only reason you’ll ever need not to write with AI — The Carlson Lab
Over the last year, our lab has been developing a policy on AI use. To do this, we did three main things: We read a lot of academic publications and tech news. We set up an #ai channel on our la...

Discovering you are trans is an amazing thing and choosing to transition is a wonderfully life-affirming decision. And the world needs to know: There’s nothing scary or dangerous about it, only the incredible, beautiful freedom of living your truth.
If you believe this, and I hope you do, there is nothing stopping you from continuing to protect your vulnerable neighbors by wearing masks in crowded and indoor spaces, especially necessary spaces like healthcare facilities, grocery stores, and public transportation. Absolutely nothing.
Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.
I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them
Notetaking in meetings is tiny case in point - used to be some predictable social assumptions who would do it; now anyone can offer to do ”notetaking” by turning on the AI listener. Further interesting scenario is human recollection / notes (taken by habit by a person) conflict with AI summary
It’s always odd to me when I get asked if I am wearing a mask because I am sick. In my experience, these days most people wearing a mask are doing so to prevent themselves getting sick, and most people who are sick don’t wear a mask at all.
The answer to the loneliness crisis isn't telling people with long Covid & other disabilities to take more health risks. It's creating a society where people don't have to choose between protecting their health & participating in community in the first place
Every time we see this kind of capitalist propaganda I want to post a photo of a regular tax-payer. This is Bob. Bob gives 20-40% of his income to paying for schools, hospitals, welfare programs and more. Bob can't afford his rent, much less a private jet, but Bob's still doing his part for society
Billionaires not getting taxed enough is why we *need* fucking charities
Today 4 Jul is US Independence Day, which was declared after the revolution of 1776. But despite rhetoric about men being "equal" and "inalienable rights", slavery continued for nearly a century and the genocide of Native Americans accelerated stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/1096...
Just here to post this again like I do every year, not only because Douglass was one of the founding philosophers of American liberty but because I am so moved by the kids Frederick Douglass’ descendants deliver “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July”

What makes the idea that the world’s problems could be solved by the creation of an artificial superintelligence such obvious BS is that we’ve already had the tech to solve the world’s problems for a long time but it’s been gatekept by capitalists just as any ostensible salvation by way of AI would.
every job i see these days is like: LEAD CONTENT ANALYST, Puppy Killing Factory (remote). $350,000 - $500,000. You will edit our internal newsletter (circulation 500). Associate Editor, Nonprofits, Global Good Magazine (in office, NYC). $27,000 - $28,000. Lead ALL of our fundraising efforts!
"Trans people will always exist." Cool. "They can't kill us all." Comforting. Yeah, transness will survive, but *I* want to survive, too, y'know? But also, survival and existence aren't enough for me anymore, and they shouldn't be enough for allies either. I want to see my trans friends thrive.
Immigrants do not have to contribute exceptionally to deserve safety Immigrants do not have to permanently grovel to their new country to justify their existence Immigrants are allowed to be just as mediocre, grumpy or homesick as anyone else
The arc of the moral universe only bends towards justice if we bend it. There's no karmic comeuppance for fascists. There's just us. Community and hard work and a willingness to to take risks and fail.

I miss Alice. She was so fucking funny and unbelievably chill. She was so warm and fun, and always ready to take something on. I wish we had more time to be friends. I also miss having someone we can all rely on to fight back and help us work together — and now that's up to us. /10
