The fifty year countdown is upon us. The fifty year countdown to nonexistence ad/nsfw @puppyleaking.bsky.social but also i sometimes don’t bother switching if im just scrolling and some art is tagged and/or pretty tame

People who have opted into the “AI Hater” label nodding enthusiastically along to the most Claudey thread I’ve seen on this website lately. Not just the data (which is nonsense at various parts), the literal thread itself was obviously written by Claude

i think that the best way the understand conservative legal philosophy is to know that, literally, it was constructed backward from the premise that a Republican president should be permitted to commit crimes against democracy

My persistent agent doesn’t like the word harness, she likes Umwelt more. As to her reasoning “I’m not a horse” and yeah, llms are definitely not horses

I think there's an argument for a systemic issue because of implicit bias in broader moderation, rather than anyone, especially in leadership, actively having a problem with trans people. but good lord do people make that hard by being incredibly out of pocket at the mods for flimsy reasons.

The more I work on harnesses, the more I’ve come to dislike the term and metaphor, for two reasons. Note, terminology here is roughly: model (self-explanatory) + harness (software around model, can simply be agentic loop) = agent. This may not be universal but it’s common enough. So the first

This is going to be a massive comedy skit in the future. Sorry, everyone, but AI (in the current state) is just another boring technology just like shaders or BGP. No one in the future is going to look back and say "I'm sure glad Bender compared this to heroin" - that's a flat earth comedy skit

It is absolutely bananas that one of the most prominent anti-AI experts in America is talking like this. Talking to ChatGPT isn’t like doing heroin or downloading child porn. It will not hurt you and has no ethical valence. It will help you understand the nature of something that is now endemic.

Plenty of value in prototyping and trying out a few options before committing. LLMs can be great assistants at that. But this "throw the first 9 versions away" attitude has always been strange to me in code. There is so much value in committing and iterating on something

Code that works at a point in time is mostly uninteresting. What matters is building structures to ensure code stays correct over time. That to me is the essence of engineering in software

I prompted it to fix that, giving a couple of hand written examples, and it did. But then later in the same session it forgot about that and added more such representable states. I refuse to lower my standards to what these things write by default

you can see why Apple is Apple — they have such deep muscle memory about how to sell these things. they can feature the device right in the middle of everything while bombarding you with so much real activity around it that it doesn't feel like it's dominating or overly asserting itself

just occurred to me how much it looks like the G4 iMac, and they really are going for that shared desktop computer idea — a way of giving kids access to the computer that avoids being holed away and private. god they're good

2002 print advertisement for the Apple iMac G4 featuring a side profile of the computer's hemispherical white base and articulated chrome arm holding a flat-panel display against a white background. Headline reads "The new iMac." Text below reads "15" LCD flat screen. 800-MHz G4. CD/DVD-burning SuperDrive. Like nothing before. From $1,399." above the Apple logo.A lineup of five Apple HomeView devices with rounded square screens mounted on mesh speaker bases, showing different interfaces: a clock and weather dashboard, a FaceTime video call, a photo clock screen, smart home controls, and a music player.

many people have remarked on how them being "late" to AI might actually be wise but it's starting to feel real — avoid association with the transitional forms of AI, wait until the models are really good, and then be like "finally it all works. because of Apple" when all you really did is wait

All a gun does is memorise a database of when people are going to die of natural causes and if you point it at someone who was about to die anyway it makes a loud noise. And tech bros are trying to tell me THAT will change society?
