If Mel Woods had their way, everyone would treat the Harry Potter series “as a regretfully significant cultural artifact of a moment in time” in light of J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans activism. With their new collaboration, Tim Hortons has done the opposite. https://ow.ly/WJUW50Zw1aA

Leaders of flag-raising group Raise the Colours Oxfordshire placed trackers on highway workers’ cars to find out their home addresses, the High Court has heard. RTC then attempted to intimidate the highway staff into no longer removing flags by repeating their addresses to them.
Used google to search for a Chinese name + 號 of a woman I saw as author of two poems published in 1797. Forgot to add "-ai". So above all the irrelevant links, was presented with a full classical bio with name, birthplace, other 號, period of activity etc. 100% hallucinated.
I do think the water thing with AI gets overplayed compared to the technology's other environmental and social harms, but AI boosters like to pretend it's entirely invented. The potable water industry in the UK - no tree huggers here - makes it clear than no, this is a very real issue.

One of the most precipitous events in the decline of HK's autonomy and the rights of Hongkongers was the disappearance of five staff members from Causeway Bay Books in 2015. What was then done covertly and abroad is now done in HK itself, in broad daylight.
I once asked a priest to bless a printer that I was in the middle of fighting with and he went "I only bless things when there's a chance it'll take" and then turned and walked out of the room.
I am tech support to the bone and do not like to mystify computer stuff but I genuinely believe in my heart of hearts that printers have demons in them. There is literally no other explanation.
We are in a climate emergency and it is killing people. Stop illustrating these stories with old timey cute beach huts and other faux boomer memorabilia. This is serious and we are in trouble. Start treating it as such.
Parts of the UK are expected to experience the third heatwave of the year this week, with conditions predicted to be less humid than during June’s heatwave. Find out more in our latest news release 👇 www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/new...
It’s so fucking awkward to have to inject “places I cannot go because I’m illegal there” into normal ass conversations about “what did you get up to on your holiday?” “Omg I went to Turkey! You should go!” “Oh you should go to Egypt and see the pyramids!” Yeah, I’d love to. I’m illegal there.
Looks like Turkey is saying they don't want EU membership. Also looks like they're not going to be a safe place for LGBT visitors either. A worthy consideration when booking your hols this year or next! www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...
There's a part in the book "Careless People" where the author beats Zuck at Settlers of Catan, and he is absolutely wrecked by it. Someone pulls her aside to explain everyone else has been letting him win for years. I think about this a lot re: why tech bros think everyone will love AI chatbots.
People who spiral out overusing LLM chatbots are really just experiencing the kind of brain-damaging stream of unconditional validation that’s always been the norm for the hyper-wealthy, which explains a lot.
God these people piss me off. They've got a whole site "New to birding" all SEO'd up to hell to capture newbie birders' search queries. Spam ass bot doesn't even know what birds are.
These fuckers came for fountain pens with SEO-heavy AI slop. Now they're coming for birds, again with AI slop attributed to an author who doesn't exist? This is personal.

As the director of a historical video game preservation institution, and someone who has dedicated his entire adult life to this cause, this is accurate. We have attempted to work with the industry's trade organization to find a legal path forward, but they refuse to offer a meaningful alternative.
piracy is the only extant form of media preservation that exists in games right now, you might find it morally reprehensible but there is literally no other institution that will keep games alive in 25, 50 years' time
it started absolutely *pouring*. shortly after they illicitly consecrated their bishops. if i was the kind of person who believed in god this is probably the sort of thing that would worry me

This is absolutely nuts: hackers are hijacking high-profile Instagram accounts by simply asking Meta's AI chatbot to change the email on the account. Meta's AI does it, hacker gets password reset code, they're in. A staggering security issue www.404media.co/hackers-simp...

In November 2023, police discovered the decayed corpse of Tracey Turnell in Walthamstow Market. She had no phone, job, passport, friends or lovers. There wasn’t a single photo of her. It was as if, in her far too public death, she entered the public record for the first time. Who was she?
