Reactionary centrists treat “Abolish ICE“ as a metaphysical question of whether immigration enforcement is ever justified. But it is really a practical question—how can you allow a fifth column paramilitary that wants to overthrow democracy to continue to exist in your government?

Following our FOIA requests, we obtained groundbreaking records showing ICE’s attempts to silence voters. ICE obtained 48.4 million records from Heather Honey, a known election denier, as a “strategic line of effort” to pursue voter fraud investigations.

it's a bit concerning that instead of responding to obvious political incentives and moderating on some of their worst and most unpopular policies, the Trump administration is getting more and more extreme

I can't beleive this is a thing I have to note, but the person they'll be shooting is paralyzed already, so they'll be lining up to shoot a man sitting in a wheelchair.

Use willpower to help plan those habits, routines, etc, and to nudge you into compliance with them when you're learning them. Don't try to change too much at once, either. You're an animal, not a computer, your life cannot be reconfigured in an instant.

the time block should be scheduled late in the day, after everything that really, really has to happen that day. chores, work shift, etc., because it's hard to break away even once you get good at it. the pull is strong. hence the original thread.

btw if you want practical "break my social media addiction" advice, this is what did it (more or less) for me: first, long break. 9 months in my case. cold turkey. idk if it needs to be that long, i didn't plan it. then, restrict use to one device and restrict use of that device to a time block.

yeah aside from taking long zero-bluesky breaks i also have an "only after 4 pm" (or, theoretically, "only between 4 pm and 6 pm" but the end is hard to enforce for reasons the thread details lol) and i only do it on a specific old laptop that's more or less dedicated to social media & discord.

the super intelligence shit is a humiliation ritual for openAI and the sector more broadly, to see if they change their name I think. I unfortunately think it's actual in terms of regime politics relatively smart.

a trivial but public and humiliating thing that you make a lot of powerful people do to show strength. everyone knows what it is, but also no one is going to pick a huge battle over the integrity of the term "artificial intelligence", so they acquiesce and become a little bit more pot committed

as his brain melts he's lost most of his touch, but Trump does have a natural bullies intuitive understanding of how to use this type of dynamic. the winning move is to tell him to fuck off but that's not a battle a lot of people will want to pick with the president.

Beyond anything else what stresses me out about this moment is that it’s occurring on the Trump admins watch, and I am confident they are not capable of handling it

the reason twitterlikes have this two-attractors structure is that they're low-throughput, high-latency, stochastic, unpredictable communication channels. i get on here because i want to have conversations. intellectual stimulation, learning, clever debating. i don't get that IRL, and i crave it.

see, i know that twitterlike social media is bad for my mental health. it manifestly is, it manifestly has been for the entire time i've used it. until recently, that has never really made a difference in how much i used social media, though.

the transition from the first equilibrium to the second usually happens over the course of a few weeks as i slowly pick Bluesky (or Mastodon or Twitter) back up again; in that phase, it looks like maybe i can keep my usage under control and inside of sensible boundaries.
