REI has the opportunity to do something really funny and ignore this for 17 months and then respond at 4:58 on a random Friday to say that the request is overly broad and production of the requested records will take an estimated 54 years or whatever.

NEW: The Department of Homeland Security has subpoenaed REI (yes, the outdoor retailer) for details on anyone who bought a specific green beanie in the Minneapolis area. It's one part of a larger, and very disturbing, effort to go after people protesting ICE:

I remember when my hometown signed onto the class action, saw it as "free money." There was never a plan, because the "intended purpose" isn't really one that can credibly be addressed in a lot of these municipalities for the amounts offered. Doesn't excuse framing OUD as public safety, but...
