People abroad don't understand the level of interference Meta & bots had in these elections. 5 days before the election a far-right politician posted a fake news video that got 157 MILLION views on Instagram in 24hs. For reference, GTA 6's reveal trailer got 90 million views on YouTube in 24hs.

I will not forget that Zuckerberg and Facebook shut down the accounts of the most popular presidential candidate in one of the largest democracies in the world, and he was elected anyway

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

And the lesson is that, despite his flaws, he had a committed focus on improving the lives of ordinary working people in tangible ways, he was uncompromising in opposition to fascists, and when he lost the first round he used it to motivate his supporters to throw everything at the second round.

And again, it's worth noting that this happened despite Lula being an incredibly flawed candidate. His son and some of his key political allies are embroiled in genuine corruption scandals. He's 80 years old. Crime is incredibly high. But he's won despite those flaws. There's a lesson in that.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

And much of Oxford Street is going car-free from tomorrow! I don't even live in London anymore but I'm genuinely excited about this. If it works well, it could be one of Khan's big legacies. People have been talking about doing this for literal decades, and now it's happening.

London has probably now got the cleanest air out of any equivalent sized cities in the world thanks to Ulez, electric cars and buses.

It's honestly insane just how much smart TVs have been outed as being full spy boxes in our homes recording everything we say, watch, and do. Yet, no AG's have launched investigations or sought to end this practice. If you own a smart TV, disconnect it from the internet. Do not connect it.

I just saw a bit of Sesame Street localised for the Australian market. "One, ha ha ha. Two! Two! ha ha ha" "Christ, who's this cunt?"

I think my ability to distinguish between "I am feeling weirdly anxious and low today" and "I am just a person having a totally normal reaction to being alive during the 2020s" might have completely vanished.

One worrying thing that comes up in this podcast is that US firms are lobbying to weaken GDPR to allow more of the data of EU citizens to be used for training genAI. GDPR is one of those rare things; an EU regulation that people can name, and which is valued by the huge majority its citizens.

The Irish government's International AI Summit was a heavy-handed pitch for the AI industry, and we weren't buying it. Get our full review of the summit and satellite events that were much more meaty in our latest episode. ▶️ S5E22: I know what you did last summit pod.fo/e/6e2b0e

news presenters (they’re not journalists lmao) can go offscript without repercussion, and now entertainment programmes will just airbrush out anything they want. how can anybody trust the BBC? what hasn’t been noticed, and what will people not notice in the future?

where does “airbrushing out people’s identities before broadcast” fit on the Lemkin Institute chart? this is doing my head in, that the BBC are so thoroughly compromised OR so scared of a reaction that they preemptively made edits. (it’s both and it’s no longer limited to news/current affairs)

If the rightwing have hijacked the term 'woke' to mean anything vaguely compassionate or progressive, we should co-opt the term 'rightwing' to mean anything perverted, cruel or violent. "I saw in the news that my old maths teacher was rightwinging a load of his pupils and now he's on a register".
