Let's try the medium place

Hello I regret to inform you that this has not been true of philosophy since at least the 1960s Do you know when the first large scale generative algorithmic syndicated photo service debuted? The 1970s. Textual illusions aren’t meaningfully different from visual illusions.

I don't understand what is confusing about this. Until recently, you could look at computers and say "Look, they're nothing like us, they're calculators, we can complete many intellectual tasks they never could." Easy, practical distinction in capabilities. Now it's getting much harder to say that.

personally I find the human chain protecting the kennedy center & celebrities showing up almost repulsive actually. hey guys maybe we do this for people and not for buildings? hey guys! literally use any of this energy for trans people or immigrants or muslims for five fucking seconds

I'm assuming that most of them meant "a durable pro-us administration whose continued survival required absolutely zero investment of US resources to remain stable and in power" to which the appropriate response would be "...what color do you want your dragon to be?"

The "I want a dragon for Christmas meme" with the "be realistic" response as "I want a durable pro-US government in Afghanistan that requires zero US support to remain in power."

I am thrilled to announce that the American Studies Program at Boston University will be accepting new PhD Students for the 27/28 academic year. These are fully funded, unionized, 5-year positions, with 4 semesters of guaranteed dissertation fellowship in years 4 & 5.

Application Deadline: December 15, 2026
The American Studies Program at Boston University is a nationally recognized leader in the interdisciplinary field of American Studies. Our students and faculty study the disparate yet interconnected cultures of colonial North America and the United States as seen in the ideas and actions of its people, and as expressed in a range of forms, especially culture, the arts, media, literature, and institutions - often seen through a global or transnational lens. Formerly known as the American & New England Studies Program, we maintain active collaborations with many cultural institutions in the region, especially in the Boston Area. Our large PhD program has produced tenure-track protessors, public historians, museum curators, and directors at major universities, museums, and other cultural and historical institutions.
Funding Opportunities
PhD students receive full funding for up to five years (12 months a year) under a collective bargaining agreement. During this time, they take courses, teach in their fields and disciplines of interest, and develop and write dissertations. The fellowship package guarantees four semesters of dissertation fellowship in years 4 and 5, with no service obligations Additional funding is available from Boston University for travel to conferences, for archival research, and for internships.
Current students have recently received outside fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, the American Antiquarian Society, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the Huntington Library, the Smithsonian Institution, the Beinecke Library, the Corning Museum of Glass, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, and the American Historical Association.
Graduate Student Association
The Program's own independent Graduate Student Association (GSA) is comprised of elected PhD students who sponsor events and programs for developing professional skills, while representing our students' interests to the governing faculty.
A list of affiliate faculty, available also on the program’s webpage

I would advise against viewing this particular cultic milieu as some new emergence of the modern era and, instead, for seeing it as the inevitable and historically consistent outcome of people being seduced by the allure of shallow gnosis.

Susan Collins is out here taking literal bribes for government contracts but you know what the real story is? gossip from a few salty Troy Jackson staffers! this is some axios-level nonsense. the only thing it’s missing is an “anonymous” quote from Josh Gottheimer complaining about progressives

This is corruption of the highest order. Susan Collins delivered millions in taxpayer dollars for a corrupt donor bankrolling her campaign, and then Donald Trump helped her cover it up. No wonder she voted with him 96% of the time and has rubberstamped his agenda to hurt Maine.

NEW: In late 2024, FBI investigators had enough evidence to launch a sweeping bribery probe that could ensnare top lawmakers, including Sen. Susan Collins. Then Trump was reelected and eviscerated the FBI and DOJ teams handling public corruption probes.

I keep an eye on Twitter to see what the far right are up to and to keep track of LA politics since local commentators, for whatever reason, still post about it there. But there is no “cultural conversation.” Musk is a straight up Nazi and the site is a fascist cesspool.

"twitter was falling apart so i'm glad @elonmusk took over but i was like elon has never ran a social media product"
"he banned me by the way. first major mistake"
"i was very skeptical and i thought this would be the end of X but my controversial take now is that X is better than ever. especially for technology and for the cultural conversation"
"we got jensen tweeting, we got zuck back on. they have all come crawling back"

"We asked 683 Democratic voters who they might support in the presidential primary that seems set to start any month now, whether Democratic senators should end the filibuster, and how they would feel if Trump died overnight, plus dozens of other questions." www.liberalcurrents.com/what-are-dem...

What Are Democrats Thinking?

Democratic voters want to end the filibuster, nationalize artificial intelligence, and prosecute every Trump toady.

if you are a Dem who for whatever reason does not feel comfortable actively defending trans rights (which you should) you have two good response options: 1. ignore it! just keep running ads about the economy 2. “I am focused on your pocketbook, my opponent is focused on children’s genitals”

Max Kennerly@maxkennerly.bsky.social · 2w ago

"This election is about the threat of trans kids" is the worst possible messaging for Dems yet so many candidates are leaning into it. No voter will flip R->D over it. Low-info voters read this as "you're focused on bullshit that doesn't affect me" while the base reads this as "you're an asshole."

"My opponent wants to hire creeps to inspect your daughter's genitals if she wants to play soccer. I wouldn't trust him or any hired weirdo from his pedophile-protecting party alone in a room with any kid." Go on the offensive, you cowards! It's not that hard!
