I keep on getting surprised by "Hadestown." I know this story, I thought I knew what I was in for. I was wrong. The thing I come back to is this: When gods and men come into conflict, men must fight against the gods, even though they will lose. Because power, unopposed, is an evil not to be borne.

there are definitely downsides to the nuclear block but the reason I keep coming back to it as necessary and good is that it completely ruined the whole MAGA engagement model to the point that they prefer to mock us from the nazi bar rather than come here to troll us directly

Bluesky oldheads will remember that brief period of time when the conservative trolls tried to storm the place and were flummoxed by the idea they would have to organically grow an audience and that someone who didn't want to talk to them could nuke every interaction they ever had from orbit

NEW: 2 people in Michigan have just died from Cyclosporiasis — the first deaths reported from the outbreak sweeping the nation. This after Taylor Farms gave *$2 million* to Trump & Republicans as they postponed a rule that could've limited the spread of outbreaks like the ongoing epidemic.

💯 A campaign donation is almost the same as a vote. Only people who can vote for someone should be able to donate to someone. No corporations No charities No churches NO OUTSIDERS. When someone "donates" to candidates/causes in states where they don't LIVE, they're stealing votes from residents.

I truly wish there was a way to restrict campaign donations to people who could vote for the candidate that they are donating to. This would eliminate outside money and corporate donations in one fell swoop. But, no, I don't expect it to happen. I just wish it would.

I cannot rest from discourse. I will see that film again tomorrow. I will drink life to the lees. Again I will enjoy greatly, will suffer greatly, both with those that love me, and in Pleasantville NY. I am become a meme. Film showing: burnsfilmcenter.org/booking/the-...

Hey, Twin Cities people: if I wanted to get nice cookies, say a dozen of them, better than what I can get at a Cub bakery, where should I go? I would prefer not to spend the earth.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

I just saw "Hadestown" and occasionally, I am getting the "Odysseus" discourse confused with "Hadestown" and honestly, it's kind of great and terrible at the same time.

Just in case anyone was wondering, "Hadestown" is brilliant. Yeah, yeah, you all told me. I just wasn't listening. It was fucking _amazing_.

There's a ton in the Middle East that I am absolutely not qualified to speak on. But it cannot be that the answer to war crimes is more war crimes.

Remember when it was an absolutely stunning achievement that all of the computer power that used to take up lots of big rooms was now able to fit in your phone that you carry around in your pocket? 2026 computer whizzes: We need acres of your land & all of your resources to make this AI stuff work.

One trip to Safeway, having pressed the "Need Assistance?" button, I started my stopwatch, committed to the bit and got ready to Wait As Long As It Took. At ~9min mark, the employee at the balloons/florist came over to ask if I needed help. They also said "Oh, that button is broken." [1/?]

As good as many of you said. I really appreciate the unambiguous point that this primarily a racist moral panic before unpacking the nuanced second-order explanations. dannykatch.substack.com/p/we-used-to...

To catch you up, MN state Sen. John Hoffman was shot in the same targeted attacks that killed Mark and Melissa Hortman. US Rep. Angie Craig then sent someone to ask for Hoffman’s endorsement for her U.S. Senate primary campaign ***while he was in the ICU*** and again when he was recovering at home.

senator hoffman has released a new statement regarding angie craig’s actions towards him, released via EMQ’s Facebook: she is so cooked

From Senator Erin Maye Quade on Facebook:

“Statement from Senator John Hoffman:

Congresswoman Craig went on FOX 9 this morning and declared that what I said was “emphatically” untrue. Her campaign has also characterized my account as “categorically false.”

Let me be equally clear: I told the truth about what Yvette and I experienced.

The screenshots released by her campaign show direct text messages from Congresswoman Craig. They do not address the substance of what I said: that a dear and trusted friend approached us twice on her behalf regarding an endorsement, once while I was in the ICU and again while I was recovering at home.

That friend confirmed that the endorsement requests came from Congresswoman Craig. Yvette was also present for these conversations. I did not invent them, and I will not allow our family’s experience to be dismissed simply because it is politically uncomfortable.”

I chaperoned a middle school field trip, and when my group saw a cybertruck in the wild they all pointed and cackled at it. They have a song they all sing about how stupid these cars are. Feel like this universal middle school disdain should be a variable in the historical car sales failure index

bloomberg has a fun article today arguing that the Cybertruck is the biggest flop in automotive history. it includes this glorious graph.

A graph showing how the edsel and Cybertruck both performed based on their sales target and actual year one and year two sales. The edsel was expected to sell 200k units in its first year. It sold slightly over 50k, and less than 50k the next year

The Cybertruck had a sales.target of 250k in its first year. They sold around 40k, the next year they sold about half as many.

"Excuse me," the man at the bar said, "but I couldn't help overhearing. Are you really saying you refuse to pick one?" "I don't see why I should have to." "It's a core part of one's identity!" "My gender and sexuality-" "Oh!" He looked relieved. "I thought you were talking about football teams."

Oh, we're putting tariffs on countries that don't do enough to stop slave labor? Can we tariff ourselves? Because the US has the largest slave labor population in the world! Again, periodic reminder that our slave labor population is larger than the workforce of Norway. Not a typo.

🤡I love it when US folk unironically try to reply to a Black civil rights advocate🙋🏿‍♂️, about how it's bad to enslave people to make cars. Your car parts were made in a jail by a Black man that has not been convicted of any crime. The US prison labor population is larger than the workforce of Norway.

No ICE agents have been killed or seriously injured by vehicles, yet we have multiple videos of ICE agents using their cars as weapons against protesters. ICE can weaponize their vehicles whenever they want, but if someone else even drives *near them* they'll use it as pretext for summary execution.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com · 2w ago

Homan: "It's only a matter time when you weaponize that two ton vehicle where an officer is not going to be able to react in time and we're burying an ICE officer ... so the vehicle stops are back on"
