"are there any bad @stephencollins.bsky.social cartoons?" No, of course not, I've been laughing at this one for three minutes

I don't understand hobbyist programmers that use AI Like if you don't enjoy solving problems what the fuck are you even doin here
imagine if they fired every band member every time an album came out
for the events that transpired this week/month/year/decade i have no words, but i still have something to say: >> youtu.be/NZTpnq0VQeU
my thoughts on the video game industry

Well overall this is actually better than I thought it would be going from the vibes last week. However I'm not sure why there needs to be a carve out for using LLMs for 'menial things' when all of the example tasks listed are perfectly possible and arguably more reliable without using them. 🤷♂️
For years we have been overwhelmed by the volume of code contributions we have to review, especially from new contributors. AI has made the problem much worse. That's why we are taking steps to reduce the burden on maintainers while still welcoming new contributors: godotengine.org/article/cont...
I don't like this response. I'll start with my conclusions and reply with details. No, I'm not leaving Godot. But no, I don't agree with this.
I see some concerns raised about Godot's policy on contributions using AI. TL;DR: Godot isn't vibe-coded. As a whole, the Godot foundation and maintainers are fairly critical of AI usage, and don't make nor accept vibe-coded contributions. Godot doesn't include AI features nor intends to add any.
AI is forcing a wedge between those who see any given craft as a means to an end vs. those who have learned to enjoy and value the skillful execution of the craft itself
Perfect ("satirical") summary of the AI bubble. The whole thing is gold: www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/ai-...
Here's an idea, maybe the Godot Foundation should conduct a poll of people who donate to the project to see what their views are on this.
This "ai code/art is already everywhere and impossible to avoid so you should just relax about people using it" shit has to stop, it's not remotely true. Same exact shit as "it's the inevitable future!" or "you can't put the genie back in the bottle!!" We can literally do whatever the fuck we want
I guess it's always going to be an uphill battle trying to convince programmers that there might be considerations above maximum speed and efficiency.
The Godot LLM stuff feels like it's going to put a lot of users in very awkward situations with their principles and stated beliefs, myself included. Maybe I'm in a bubble but gamedev feels pretty tight knit and the overwhelming majority of competent creators seem to be against LLM usage.
This is the galling thing. Your official policy can be ’discourage use’ but then it appears that’s just a do as I say not as I do situation. With how vociferous the reaction can be around indie games found to be using LLMs I’m surprised the Godot foundation isn’t considering the reputational damage.
So here’s the thing. Regular contributors, key maintainers, and project leaders are using LLMs in their work (not always for the final code itself). This is not a matter of “inevitable” external slop getting in. On the principle, several in the project are AI users and use it while working on Godot.
Obviously the Trenchbroom situation sucks but I'm confused as to why I seem to be noticing a more significant backlash against the one guy who maintains that compared to say Godot where there's an increasing number of PRs with AI disclosures (which, for clarity, also sucks).
Sneak peek of a new environment and a little freak I've added to my game :)
