Just watched 'The Laughing Death'. Finale of S2 of Caped Crusader. WOW. So impressed. A genuinely terrifying Joker. A perfect Batman. Loved it.

I've never had a woman try to talk me into using AI. Men: constantly, enthusiastically, unprompted.
This is like the business card scene in AMERICAN PSYCHO but everyone’s whipping out their PhD in Literature.
Dying. It continues. SUSAN ORLEAN
This is one of the best books I have ever read. Haven't read anything quite like it before - it is absolutely beautiful.

AI Companies Are Trying to Hide a Staggering Amount of Debt
AI companies are pouring tens of billions of dollars into enormous data centers. They're being built on top of a mountain of hidden debt.

The oddest thing about the response to this essay is people who say it’s “personal”. You can disagree about some or all of it! I may well be wrong! But it’s not “personal” to analyze a film or other work of art, even negatively. Criticism is more than “Hurray!” or “Hiss!”
Re the Emily Wilson discourse - her Dad (A N Wilson) was the king of literary feuds. A good family tradition. Best one was his feud with Bevis Hillier who hoaxed him into including a fake letter in his biography of Bejteman where the first letter of each sentence spelt "AN Wilson is a shit".

When my employer was dealing with a prof being made the Libs of TikTok main character, I told them "add a piece in the student handbook that anyone recording classes without explicit permission from the instructor & all attendees will be expelled the first time." [Narrator: "they did not do this."]

Yes. And we already know all about that because he *checks notes* has an encounter with the ghost of Christmas past.
First poster for ‘EBENEZER’, a new film based on ‘A Christmas Carol’ starring Johnny Depp. “Before he was Scrooge, he was Ebenezer”
I actually think the trillionaire saying his AI tool will remake a movie without the Black and trans actors in it should be a bigger story because it’s a perfect example of why the ruling class wants AI to succeed: so they can remake reality without those they deem undesirable - every nazi’s dream.

Worth remembering the Guardian entered into a partnership with OpenAI a while ago, so all their articles on the matter should be viewed through that lens.
Could AI be conscious?
One of the reasons why we are letting AI destroy our children’s education is because we have failed to root out the false idea that education is measured by what students produce. 1/
Unfettered access to chatbots can harm educational outcomes Using AI while solving problems improves performance by 48% (GPT base). When access to AI was taken away, students actually performed worse than those who never had access (17% reduction in grades) www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
Imagine having Bukayo Saka on the bench and bringing on Dan Burn.
"don't cite what you haven't read" remains the basic entry level academic responsibility; & if your discpline "doesn't have that as a norm" then sorry, your discipline needs reforming for this new world. Citations are structural parts of trust and knowledge building, not trinkets or optional extras
Academics and technologists are sounding the alarm about a growing crisis in scholarship as we know it: AI-generated citations of nonexistent papers that have infested real journals. Despite being fake, the sources are widely assumed to be authentic the more they appear in published literature.
It would be nice if just one of Ireland's various state or affiliated bodies did its actual job.
Thanks only to EU reporting requirements, we know that 18 data centres in Ireland used 627 megalitres of water in 2024. But there are 123 data centres operating here now, and just one data centre, Meta's Clonee facility, used 659 megalitres in 2023. 2/3 www.dublininquirer.com/does-irish-w...
