@abdulelsayed.bsky.social triumphing over something like $60 million, $32-ish million of it AIPAC money, is not a "narrow" victory, it's a people's earthquake. This kind of spending is oligarchy in action, to smother democracy through its formal channels, and is getting normalized. Still he won.
I was appalled (though not surprised) when I learned Sunday that Senate Dems intend to help Republicans fund the government through the election, with one minimal concession that has nothing to do with election subversion or ongoing Trump theft of federal dollars from blue states. And I remain so.
Senate Democrats Dodge Last Pre-Election Opportunity To Fight Trump
They won't take a big stand to protect the election, or resist Trump's broader lawlessness, before the midterms.

“The paper by Metzger et al adds to a large existing body of evidence that suggests the highly politicized concerns about misdiagnosis or rushed treatment for gender dysphoria in youth are not supported by available research.”
A new study out of Canada looked at four youth gender clinics. Out of 445 patients only four who started gender affirming hormone therapy ceased taking it, and only one did so due to a re-identification with their birth sex. assignedmedia.org/breaking-new...
Is everyone aware of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy? In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

This is ridiculously scary. Yes, we are currently talking about ballrooms and reflecting pools and inflation and Iran and Venezuela and Epstein and crypto grift and the moral rot of the GOP. But all that is going to be forgotten soon. Shit is about to get real, as they say.
I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.
There is no version of yourself you could become that would satisfy the people who hate you. So you might as well be who you are.

OUT TODAY, the AAUP just released the first comprehensive account of how the Trump administration has taken the same playbook it's used on law firms & foreign governments & turned it on American universities. US higher ed has, in effect, become a target of a massive extortion racket. 🧵

Something I love doing is talking about fossil fuels as "19th century technology". Coal plants and gas plants are machines from CENTURIES ago. The combustion engine is silly. It gets people thinking about what modernity means but also, importantly, it makes fossil fuel guys mad online
In 1984, George Orwell writes about how "All rulers in all ages have tried to impose a false view of the world upon their followers," but these lies & delusion eventually run aground on war, where "Physical facts could not be ignored." Anyway, just thinking about this now for no reason.
@aclu.org Is it legal for a school district/school board to lead teachers in a prayer before a back to school new teacher event?
Casual reminder that the original plan for Ben Shapiro's "Lady Ballers" was for it to be an undercover documentary where dudes sign up to compete in women's sports, only to find out that places that allow trans athletes to compete actually have rules and standards.
Ben Shapiro spends his entire show mocking the WNBA and its players. Including a montage his team put together of missed shots at the All-Star game which he laughs at. It's incredible how much transphobia can just let you be an open misogynist.

In recent weeks, congressmen like Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) and Rep. Michael Rulli (R-OH) have leveled racist attacks against immigrant communities in their districts. As I note in CAMPAIGN TRAILS, a century ago those same racist attacks were being made against people named Emmer and Rulli.
Stepping off of Marcy's "Machine for Fascism" concept, I tried to lay out "The GOP’s Large Hadron Collider for Fascism," all of the right's advantages that don't go away when the current Republican president turns out to be the worst president in history, again. www.thefarce.org/why-trump-be...

so one thing i find extremely striking is that in REPUBLIC plato basically endorses the idea that qualified women should have the same rights as men--the same ability to be philosopher-kings. this is an *ancient* idea. the hard question of history is why it took so long to be even partially realized
one tendency that comes out about period films is the insistence that XYZ moral thought would not have occurred to anyone in the ancient world. to be sure there are moral innovations and changes but the existence of thorough dissatisfaction with the present moral order is not a modern phenomenon

I enjoyed Nolan's ODYSSEY quite a bit, and found it more moving than expected. I also read Wilson's critique and found that both enjoyable and insightful. It's not even really a bad review -- it's an incisive dissection from the POV of someone whose knives have long been sharpened on the material.
Clarifying to see how a lot of “respect the troops” was always BS. They never meant it, never thought taking on risk for national service was honorable, just saw people serving the country as props, and “respect the troops” as a selective way to try to silence disagreement over foreign policy.
So Trump started the war, then stood over the flag-draped caskets of fallen service members and claimed they all agreed with his decision? That’s not honoring the dead; that’s using them as political props. The families deserve better.
