Self-employed people! Sorry to put a downer on your Sunday, but in case you'd not seen, the Government wants us to pay our tax *monthly* like we're employees or something With the World Cup and all the politics, I'd missed the consultation they put out last month, which is here: 1/

I don’t trust any rejigging of freelance tax reporting while no drop down menu has “writer” on it. Fortune teller? Yeah. Writer? Nope. Until you accept we exist, I don’t think you’ll understand what we do, or be able to make it “simple” to work out our tax.
Or much of a drop in public support. Fascinating example of elite consensus switching despite popular opinion.
In two years Net Zero went from broad political consensus to politically toxic, without any particular scandal over the policy.
A handful of years ago the internet was amazing as you could look up - say - net curtains and find a loving history blog post by an academic that wouldn't just help but was inspiring. Now you just get a summary of it by a liar.
SUVs are higher at the front and three times more likely to kill a child when they hit them. SUV drivers drag the child under their vehicle, and then they crush the child to death. It's incredible that SUVs don't have higher tax, and why not lower speed limits. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Britain’s cars and SUVs are growing bigger – but there is a way to stop this deadly ‘carspreading’ | Christian Wolmar
Larger vehicles crowd our roads and are far more dangerous to pedestrians. Let’s curb them before they do even more damage, says says transport commentator Christian Wolmar

I bought MS Office back in 2021 because I need Word for my job, which is mainly writing, and occasionally reading things other people have written on Word. Then this year, I'm told it has "expired". Yes! A thing that I BOUGHT has EXPIRED. So I am NO LONGER ALLOWED TO USE IT even though I BOUGHT IT.
So bad at Bluesky that I forgot to say my book is out. My book is out! You can get it from your preferred retailer or local bookshop or any of these places: linktr.ee/Service0625 And please for God's sake do

If young people are being taught by society/government messaging/their parents/schools that they won't be able to make a living if they study a humanities subject we are creating a vicious cycle. We must ask who does this messaging serve and why is our society buying into it?
'About 150 academic roles are set to go at the south-west institution, which said it was targeting areas that are “no longer sustainable” or have seen changes in student demand.' History and English are name-checked. 1/3

Of course the prime minister is posting on X about how bad the riot organised on X is. Fucking of course he is. An expression of complete subservience to the men in Silicon Valley and the White House who have instigated this moment.
It’s hard to imagine any technology that has ever fucked it this badly, and purely through arrogance, it’s like if the people who invented the car decided to showcase its utility by driving over your family dog and then backing up and doing it again, and also the car sucked and was bad

Here's the serious bit for anyone who'd rather skip the 4000 words of jokes
“You should try living in a hot county. It’s like this all the time” What part of me throwing myself into a canal, with a Calippo in each hand, screaming "KILL THE SUN WITH LASERS!” makes you think I want to live in a hot country, pal? x
There are French people on my rail replacement bus and I feel genuinely embarrassed?? I don't want Europeans knowing that we live like this

I keep seeing "all authors use AI, the real issue is they're being forced to be sneaky about it" headlines. Full stop No. This is a lie peddled for normalization. It's schoolyard-level pressure tactics "C'mon, all the cool kids are already doing it. We won't tell. It's fine. We're on your side."
